Moray (Elginshire) / James Roy born circa 1775
« on: Sunday 20 October 13 05:19 BST (UK)  »
James Roy born circa 1775 married Jean Innes at Elgin in 1794.

Jean Innes and James Roy had children - Margaret baptised 1795 Elgin, Ann baptised 1797 Rothes.

I was wondering if their children's baptism records, or James and Jean's marriage record, may give an occupation for James.

Armed Forces / John Bailey, Royal Artillery, Napoloenic period
« on: Thursday 13 June 13 03:03 BST (UK)  »
My ancestor John Bailey served in the RA during Napoleonic times. He was born circa 1791 place unknown. He was a Chelsea Pensioner according to later non-army records. He appears to have been discharged between 1820 and 1823 (based on occupations given on children's baptism records). Following discharge he lived at Woolwich and worked as a painter at Woolwich Barracks for many years. Died at Woolwich 1850. An 1823 discharge would give a total service of no more than 16 years - is this long enough to get a pension - or do I have his birthdate wrong?

I cant find a service record for him that fits with this. There are other alternative spellings such a Bayley, Baillie, but I have search those names as well.

What other sources of information should I be looking at to find out anything about his service in the RA?.

Armed Forces / William Evans, Royal Marine Artillery, Napoleonic period
« on: Thursday 13 June 13 02:49 BST (UK)  »
My ancestor William Evans seved in the RMA in Napoleonic times. He was born in Westbury Somerset circa 1779, died Coleford Glos 1853.

He is described as a Greenwich Pensioner in later records so must have had a long service, and lived long enough to be possibly awarded a Naval General Service Medal (a RM Private on HMS Kent got the Egypt clasp - I dont know if this was him - there were also two RM Privates at Trafalgar on HMS Bellerophon and Defence)

My understanding is that the RMA were employed on "bomb vessels" equiped with mortars. (Was this always the case - HMS Kent Bellerophon and Defence were not bomb vessels?)

What sources of information should I be looking at to find out more about his service?

Is it possible to find his mother's name from this information, or any additional information about his father?

I am looking for the death of John McNeil who was married to Elizabeth Gillespie on 16 October 1853 in Saint Ninians, Stirlingshire.  He does not appear on the 1861 or 1871 Scotland Census.

New Zealand Completed Requests / Arthur Fearn (or Jellyman)
« on: Sunday 17 February 13 03:01 GMT (UK)  »
Arthur Fearn was born in Blenheim in 1882. The last known record of him was a mention in Papers Past that showed him living in Blenheim in 1913. Other earlier records show him on the Electoral Roll in Christchurch South 1911 and Wairau 1905-6.

He was illegitimate and his paternity is uncertain, but my belief is that his father was James Jellyman, a married brewer of Blenheim, who died in 1913. So there may be the possibilty he changed his name to Jellyman after 1913. Fearn was a name used by his mother.

I cant find any record of him after 1913.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Charles Roberts of Leeds
« on: Saturday 29 December 12 00:13 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for information about the parents and grandparents of Charles Roberts, born Leeds 1861, died Leeds 1905, and who was a founding member of the Independent Labour Party.

What (I think) I know so far:

Father: John Roberts born 1819 London, bootmaker
Mother: Mary Whitaker born 1822 Leeds (I have details of her parents)
Married 30/9/1841 Kirkstall
Deaths: Unknown

Grandfather: Edward Roberts (as named on certificate of above marriage)

The main problem getting any further is that the names are very common and I cant be sure what information is correct.

Scotland / Re: Andrew Dowie
« on: Thursday 29 November 12 21:03 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you all for the information so far. It is all very interesting and it is nice to now know so much about his life in the army. His own description of his part in the Battle of Alexandria, which I was not aware of, is fascinating.

I live in New Zealand, and it is good to know about my Scottish ancestry.

Died Glasgow 1848. They had 14 children according to a newspaper biogaphy in 1845, his wife accompanying him on his army travels.

I am a descendent of their son Andrew (jnr) born Sicily 1812.

I have never been able to identify his wife and when/where married.
