Thanks Rosie, I've ordered the BC for William T.

If anyone's interested, the tree's on ancestry.com as Jackson / Johnson (public)

... although the Parish Register birth entries I've found for both children give mother's name as Mary Ann Johnson. Would the actual certificate give her maiden name?

Sorry, just started, and getting used to protocols   :)

> The birth certificate of one of the children would give her maiden name
Stupidly, instead of doing that I've ordered a BC for Mary Ann which won't tell me anything! More thought required...

Just for info:

I just looked at the fiches in Portsmouth RO and it seems like the possibilities are

Mary Ann Webb (baptised 24/12/1802) daughter of John and Mary
Mary Ann Farndell (baptised 17/7/1803) daughter of Arthur and Phoebe

and a few Marys - Rogers (ds. of William/Mary or William/Phoebe), Duke (Edward/Mary), Cox (James/Ann), and Coxe (Matthew/Mary).

familysearch.org gives the same results if you search on Warblington rather than Emsworth

Thanks Dawn, I've already been warned of the dangers.  The tree I'm using most was built by my niece's husband and he's quite a conscientious bloke, although more interested, and so more conscientious, about his own side.... I take your point though, and will be doing some confirmation  :)

The other possible lead, following from the Scottish hint, is a woman called Mary Dolores Bisset (born 1898) who had a sister Isabella Bisset. Presumably somewhere in their family is a Spanish connection. From the 1891 Scottish census, her parents were Alexander and Margaret. She's mentioned as a part of a private tree that includes McElhinney, which name occurs in the immediate family of my sister's husband - so perhaps Lilyan had heard a story from one of *his* family and was simply pointing out the similarity in names.  Anyway, I'm going to check out that side next

Thanks for your help, much appreciated.

I've only been doing this a week, and have mainly been using other people's trees to fill in my own tree (public Jackson / Johnson on ancestry.com). I found those marriages, but I thought they might not be exhaustive, or perhaps the 'grandfather' was actually an uncle or a lover. I guess I'm hoping that someone from the Spanish woman's family is looking for info from her side.

Lilyan was my mother and never talked about her family except to hint to my sister about her name, and once she hinted to me that her grandfather was a Scottish bloke who had a liaison with a Spanish woman. The Lilyan Jackson you've dug out (for which many thanks) is too old - my mum was born in 1912, died 1985. People's memories play up, and Lilyan might have been very young or have been told the story by someone else, so 'Scottish' might mean just 'Northern' or something else. It's not a lot to go on, but I told my sister (who's 77 now, and very interested) I'd try to find her namesake, so that's what I'm doing. The tree on ancestry.com is just a by-product of the search    :)

The familysearch.org site doesn't work here. I get the search page, but when I press the button to do the search I either get a page of HTML (the example I gave) or two little wheels turning, which I've twice left for an hour to do its thing before giving up.

Sorry- beginner - but thanks for replying  8-)

I've tried searching the records you mention on ancestry.com, but no luck so far. More details:

William George Jackson (1874-1939)
b. 102 West Wick, Bradwell, Essex, England
d. 17 Rowley road, Carshalton
m. Maud Louise King 25/12/1901

George Jackson (1848-1917)
b. Tillingham, Essex, England
d. Essex
m. Emma Eliza Brett

Henry William King (1843-1890)
b. Bermondsey, London, England
d. London
m. Emily Ellen Dobson

Charles Henry Herbert (1873-1918)
b. Kensington, Middlesex, England
d. 3a Baylin Road Wandsworth
m. Elizabeth Eliza Young 26/9/1899

James Joseph Young (1851-1941)
b. Kentish Town, London, Middlesex, England
d. ??
m. Elizabeth Sarah Haynes 21/1/1872
m. Emily Ann Grove 14/3/1886

I also tried using the rootschat search page you pointed me to, but all I got was a page of stuff beginning

{"next":"http://hr-search-api:8080/searchapi/search?count=10&offset=10&query=%2Bsurname%3AKing%7E","facets":[{"token":"http://hr-search-api:8080/searchapi/search?count=10&query=%2Bsurname%3AKing%7E&

etc etc. ending with

},"score":0.73099995}],"totalHits":3840634,"offset":0}

I tried several times with the same result, so possibly too many hits to handle  8-)

Long shot....

My sister, Dolores* (b. 1935) believes she was named after a Spanish woman, who she thinks was the wife of her, or her mother Lilyan Jackson's, clergyman grandfather. Most likely possibilities for him are

William George Jackson (1874-1939)
George Jackson (1848-1917)
Henry William King (1843-1890)
Charles Henry Herbert (1873-1918)
James Joseph Young (1851-1941)
Spelling of the wife might be Dolores or some variation with a Z (Delorez?)
