Thanks for your reply.  John's family moved to Mountnessing and I am still tracing that side.  Joseph, from whom I am descended, was in farming but when he retired moved in with his son George who was a publican.  They moved to Stonden Massey and Ongar and other sons moved to the Clerkenwell and West Ham areas.  I have been unable to trace John and Joseph back prior to Stock & Buttsbury so at this stage am not aware of any other siblings which could tie in with the other Essex BARNES families.

I am still hoping someone may be able to help me break down my "pre Stock Buttsbury" brick wall  :-\

Essex / BARNES in Essex

I am having difficulties tracing my BARNES family in Essex. I am particularly interested in Joseph Thomas BARNES b 1842 who married Mary JENKIN, and his father Joseph BARNES born c1804 who married Mary PORTER.  I can trace the family back to the Stock/Buttsbury area with links to Ramsden Crays.  Joseph had a brother John, born c1807 (both born in Buttsbury) and John's family moved to Mountnessing.  Is anyone else researching this particular BARNES family?  I have most census returns (apart from difficulty locating Joseph in 1861) but cannot identify who or where John and Joseph's parents were.  Any assistance would be much appreciated!

I am trying to trace the marriage of John BARNES b c1806 in Buttsbury to Mary b c1807 in Great Burstead.  Their first (as far as I know!) child was James BARNES, born in 1928 in Mountnessing.  If anyone is able to locate the marriage record I would be very grateful.

I wondered if someone might be able to look up any records for Sarah PORTER, born 1811 in Ramsden Crays. I have no information as to her parents or any siblings and any info would be much appreciated. (I have seen the posting re her marriage to Jeseph BARNES in 1829).
