Armed Forces / George Breen, Blacksmith, 58th Regiment of Foot, enlisted 1807
« on: Friday 13 October 23 14:25 BST (UK)  »
My ancestor George Breen (e), born Clonenagh, Queen's County, Ireland was a blacksmith in the above regiment from 1807 and was discharged from Kilmainham Hospital, Dublin on 26 June 1816 due to a diagnosis of 'epilepsy'.
I'm keen to find out where he might have served and wonder if the only way to get this information is by visiting Kew.  Any guidance would be appreciated.

Hi, not sure if replies to this thread are bouncing to the OP but I have an Eager as a sponsor for a baptism in Ardfert...could it be this rather than Egan?
Regards,

Irene

Kerry / Re: Griffin surname

My maternal line is Griffin on both sides...both from Listowel/Duagh area in North Kerry.  If you pin your Griffins down to that area I'll see if I have any info that might help.

Hi Sunnylew, you mention RIC records and Christopher Julian of Tullamore House - that is at the opposite side of Listowel to Duagh, and in a different Parish. Tullamore is between Ballylongford and Listowel whereas Duagh is between Listowel and Abbeyfeale.   Did Christopher Julian recommend your John Guerin for the RIC?  He most likely lived in the vicinity of Tullamore if that is the case rather than in Duagh.
Regards,

Kerry / Re: Duagh / Dowar - same place?
« on: Thursday 22 January 15 01:04 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, yes it's a phonetic pronunciation of Duagh - I'm from a town about 5 miles away and Doo-wah is a close enough approximation of what it sounds like.
I have an ancestor from there who died in WW1 - for a small parish I would not have thought that there were many sons of Duagh who had served in it.
Let me know if you need any help with records from there - the Parish Priest was extremely helpful and generous with access to the records when I was working on that side of my Family Tree.
Regards.

Laois (Queens) / Re: Timothy Fitzpatrick and Catherine Power marriage Mountrath
« on: Thursday 22 January 15 00:57 GMT (UK)  »
Hi sirsimon, I'm not sure if you're still looking for this information.  I haven't checked the Laois Rootschat page in a while!
I have found a marriage of Tim Fitzpatrick and Catherine Pound who were married on 10 July 1837. They were from Ringstown Mountrath and witnesses were John Baker and Margaret Brennan.  I've only checked for 1837 as their first child seems to have been born in 1838.
This of course may not be them but in searching for an Ann Power from the Mountrath area I've found it also written as Powell and Powel.
These parish records are digitised on a well-known genealogical website if you have access to that.

Kerry / Re: Carrol (O) Sullivan

Hi, firstly, the Duagh records are very much intact and are quite accessible in the Presbytery in Duagh.  Many of them are digitised through Church Records on Irish Genealogy.ie.- I got many of my own records there - much clearer than in the NLI.
Was Carrol O'Sullivan married to a Honora Connor?  There are 2 Tralee marriage records that you may already have seen - Eileen O'Sullivan to Thomas Slattery on 7 Feb 1875 and Margaret O'Sullivan to Jeremiah Brosnan on 22 July 1875.  Eileen and Margaret are both from Leith/Leath.

Galway / 1834 Residents of Kinvara, Duras & Killina
« on: Monday 14 July 14 23:18 BST (UK)  »
Hi, for anyone who is doing research on the above, I came across a "List of the Inhabitants of the United Parishes of Kinvara, Duras and Killina" while looking for baptismal records for Craughwell parish in the NLI.  It was done in 1834 and is on Microfilm P2442 in the NLI.
It may be useful to anyone doing research for ancestors in any of those parishes.  I'm sorry I don't have much more information but I can check it out again if needed.

The Common Room / Re: Petty Court records - charge?
« on: Wednesday 25 June 14 23:07 BST (UK)  »
Many thanks Stan for such a prompt and interesting reply!
My gggrandfather owned a public house which could also have been a shop.  This charge against him in the Petty Sessions ties in with him owning a cart to deliver to customers.
Interestingly there were also 2 charges in subsequent years for using an improper measure in his shop!
thank you!
