Hi Stuart,

I don't know whether you have gotten any further since the posts that are here, but Pam and I have been able to confirm Margaret Froster as the wife of William Rettie/Raittie (b.July 6, 1678), and that his father was John Raittie.

You might want to talk to Pam about further info as we also found several more children. She has copies of the original baptism records. I believe she found them on scotlandspeople.

I'm away for a month, but will continue to dig.

WOW! I found the farm!

I located Middlehill on your sites and on Google Earth so spent an entire afternoon travelling through the area. I feel like I just had a holiday in Scotland!

I really appreciate all your input. Thanks so much to everyone.

Hi,

I just joined, so not too sure how this all works, but Pam and I have made some inroads into the Rettie clan since she posted in January. I think she has posted our findings on her Ancestry profile, but we are happy to answer questions, too.

I have a question about place names within parishes. For example, in baptism records for 5 of the children of William Raittie/Rettie/Retty/Retie/Ratie, etc. (b. July 6, 1678, wife -Margaret Froster) of Monquhitter parish he is listed as being "in Middlehill". Would that have been the name of a town in Monquhitter or perhaps of his own house, or just a general district? Being from Canada, I am not familiar with how addresses are/were handled in Scotland.

Also, has anyone from that region heard of a place called (as far as I can make out the handwriting) Croitown? (where William's father was from) I can't quite make out the writing on the baptism certificate, but I that's what it looks like, so I hope the name might be familar to someone from the area. I see Windsor87 is in Fraserburgh which is the general vicinity - no?

Thanks for any insights anyone can offer.
