Occupation Interests / Re: New 'Clergy' database
« on: Thursday 06 October 05 17:57 BST (UK)  »

In October 1999 the project team began work on the design of a relational database covering all clerical careers in the Church of England between 1540 and 1835, to be made available in electronic form for public access over the internet.

This site is now to be found at

Dorset Lookup Requests / Re: 1851 census look up BURDEN (Corfe Mullen area)
« on: Wednesday 28 September 05 17:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi Amelia
1851 Census Corfe Mullen (HO107/1854 fol.619 is the correct reference) -
Uptown
Mary BURDEN                M 47                                Hant. Southampt.
Maryan BURDEN    Dau  U 23  Seamstress            Dorset Canford
Cosmas BURDEN   Son  U 10  Scholar                   Dorset Canford
Damon BURDEN     Son  U  ?10/8  Scholar            Dorset Canford
Mary BURDEN        Dau  U  6  Scholar                   Dorset Canford
John BURDEN    Visitor Wid U 87  Annuitant        Dorset Woolbridge

The saints Cosmas & Damian (the correct spelling) were twins and are the patron saints of pharmacists and physicians. The ages of the two Burden children are difficult to read, and it is possible that they were twins too and perhap their correct age is 10 - if you can find their baptisms you could check this. The saints had brothers called Anthimius, Leontius and Euprepius, so if the Burdens had more sons .....   ;D

Hi Terry
There were two BARTLETT households in Morden on the two pages of HO107/1856 f463 that you referenced. From their ages etc it seems likely that the second were descendants of the first family, and that they lived close to one another, but the address of the first household was (I think) "Frogmoor" and of the second just "West Morden". The writing was very faint and not easy to read, so I am also in doubt as to the occupation of William BARTLETT and the birthplace of his wife.

William BARTLETT  Head M 56 Drill Man  Ag Lab   Dorset Almer
Elizabeth BARTLETT  Wife M 54                         Dorset  ?---yston
Sarah BARTLETT  Dau U 28                                Dorset Morden
Prudence BARTLETT  Dau U 21                           Dorset Morden
Maryann BARTLETT  Dau U 19                            Dorset Morden
Catherine BARTLETT  Dau U 13                           Dorset Morden
Charlotte BARTLETT  Dau U 11                            Dorset Morden
Ann COAKES Mother-in-law Wid 85  Pauper      Dorset Stickland
Sarah BARTLETT  G-Dau U 8                                London
Tom BARTLETT  G-Son U 4                                   London

Charles BARTLETT  Head M 23   Ag Lab              Dorset Morden
Amelia BARTLETT  Wife M 22                            Dorset Briantspuddle
Sarah BARTLETT  Dau U 2                                  Dorset Morden
Louisa BARTLETT  Dau U 1                                 Dorset Morden

Dorset / Re: Lookup Please - John Roberts & Elizabeth Rowland
« on: Friday 02 September 05 19:11 BST (UK)  »
Hi Joanne
Pleased to report that chloed is on the right trail!
It is not normally possible to get any sort of "certificate" for baptisms, marriages or burials before 1837, and the parish registers vary greatly in the amount of detail they contain. In the case of John ROBERTS and Elizabeth ROWLAND the register gives little more information than you have already. First one correction: they were married by licence not by banns. They both signed the marriage register so they were at least literate to that extent. The witnesses do not appear to have been related to them - at least neither of them were called ROBERTS or ROWLAND.
I have looked through the Hinton St Mary registers between 1780 and 1810, and it seems almost certain that John parents were John ROBERTS and Sarah DODWELL, who were married in HStM by banns on 17 October 1785. They had a number of children, among them John - baptised on 30 August 1789.
I think Elizabeth's parents were Matthew ROWLAND and Elizabeth MULLENS, who were married in HStM by banns on 21 September 1786. They also had a number of children, among them Elizabeth - baptised at the age of 3 years on the same day as a one-year-old brother: 7 July 1790.
All four were "of this parish" so I hope you will be able to go back further with this information.

Hi Amelia
George Medland does not appear to have been at home for the 1841 census, which shows only his wife Jane (40) straw joiner, and children Sarah (20), Mary (15), William (8) and John (6) -  all born outside the county.
In 1851 the family was at Hurn Down, Hampreston:
George (54) quack doctor, b. East Ogwel, Devon
Jane (53), b.St Mary Church, Devon
William H (17) ag.lab., b. Yeovil, Somerset
John (15) ag.lab., b. Yeovil, Somerset
?Tah-- (4) grandson, b. Hampreston (Couldn't read the name!)
East Ogwell is a mile or two southwest of Newton Abbot. Marychurch is now part of north Torquay

Hi
Checked Bridport marriages for December 1874 and there was only one - between John Tillman and Eliza Lacey - no mention of any Rendall/Robbins marriage I'm afraid.
