Maddy 52. thank you. I won't hold my breath then. They quote their aim is seven days... :-(

amondg - I can't find a Thomas or Sarah Shinton near Bewdley in the 1841 or 1851 census. The closest is Wolverhampton and Claverley I think. I haven't done an exhaustive search yet but I can't see an easy family connection to Joseph or Elizabeth but thank you for the suggestion.

Yes DNA is the only hope to find Josephs Father.

A Tree has his Parents as Joseph/Ann but that Joseph Jnr is still at home and unm in 1851.
Occp Waterman.

ANN Darke may have been buried 05 Nov 1850 Christchurch, Wribbenhall
Age 70 (birth c 1780)
1841 she is a Washerwoman

There are also a JOSEPH Dark and SUSAN Dark buried there 16 Dec 1842 and 07 Jun 1844
Age 95/90
Anns Parents?
Good ages anyhow!

Trish :)

Trish. thank you for taking an interest in my post.

I could be wrong myself but I feel fairly certain that the tree you refer to has an error. It is referring to the father as Joseph Darks born in 1783. He and his wife, annoyingly also called "Ann" did have a son called Joseph Darks baptised in 1821. According to the baptism record father John was a Waterman. As you say, that father and son are both shown as Watermen living in Lax Lane in the 1851 census. In 1851 our Joseph is living with his wife Elizabeth in Severn Side.

The baptism of our Joseph clearly shows him as illegitimate and his mother as Ann. I am fairly certain that his mother Ann died in 1841 and was buried in January 1841 at Ribbesford.

Unfortunately her death does not appear in the GRO index despite the volume number and page being available on Ancestry and FindMyPast. That means that at the moment I cannot order the £3 death certificate. I have applied for her name to be added to the GRO index and all being well that might happen this week (fingers crossed). Hopefully that should mean that I can then order the £3 certificate and at least see who reported her death. Otherwise I will have to pay for the full cost certificate.

Not that any of that will get me any closer to who his father was.

You have to love genealogy :-)

Thank you Maddys52. That is a lovely piece of social history, some of which I will use to add colour to Joseph's biography.

Hi,

The marriage certificate is available at Anc. It says they were married in the Chapel of Christ Church after banns by Willm HALLEN? They are both under age and it's quite unusual in that it only says "Mother's name Ann DARK" where both fathers are usually named.

This might be the Chapel,

Thank you very much Daisy, it looks like that could well be the Church. I am very grateful.

I have the Ancestry wedding register image you refer to but I just can't see where it says Christ Church. It is probably me being thick.

As you say it is odd that it only mentions "Mother Ann Dark". To be fair Joseph's baptism did not mention a father, only his mother Ann, and I am still trying to track down a father but I need to learn a lot about how to use my DNA results for that.

Elizabeth's mother and father are known but she would only have been 16 at the time of the marriage (baby to follow quickly after) so she may not have wanted her parents to know.

It is a bit odd that Joseph is shown as under age as he was baptised on 24 January 1824 making him over 21 when he married. However, the 1841 census has him as 15 instead of 17 so maybe he did not know his real age.

Thank you again for your interest and help.

Worcestershire / Wribbenhall Marriages 1845

I have two ancestors who married at Wribbenhall, Bewdley in 1845. Googling suggests that they would probably have married at Christ Church before All Saints was built in 1879. I see mentions that Lord Foley prevented the people of Wribbenhall from using the church but that it was sorted out well before 1845.

Unfortunately the page from the marriage register just says Wribbenhall and does not show the name of the church.

I was wondering if anyone had any more information about Christ Church. Maybe even a photo or drawing?

Out of interest the couple concerned were Joseph Dark and Elizabeth Hemming.

I have most of the usual documents relating to their lives: baptisms, censuses, baptisms of children, death certificates etc and I am well aware that their name can be any of Dark/Darke/Darks/Darkes but his name was Dark in the marriage register, as it was when he was baptised, the illegitimate son of Ann Dark in 1824.

I do have more research to do on "Joseph Darkes" (as he called himself in the 1851 census) though as there seem to be a good few court appearances of Joseph Darkes of Bewdley. I am not yet sure how many Joseph Darkes lived in the area around that time. A quick initial search this morning suggests it might just be the one of the right age...

If anyone could help with more information about the church I would be very grateful.

... and thank you Shaun J for your contribution too. It has all helped to eliminate Harold as the possible 3rd person.

My apologies for not being clearer. Thank you alan o for that information. I do now recall that Harold was in the RAF in 1918 when he went to Signal School.

So it looks like the guy with the riding gear must be Henry / Harry and I need to try and find a service record for him in WWI. If anyone could hazard a guess on regiment based on the uniform it might give me a leg up in my search. Thanks

Hi Folks, I have been passed this photo by a friend because I was telling them about my earlier post today. The photo is from their family collection but they have no idea who they might be so I hope it can still be included in this forum without names.
If someone would be prepared to do whatever improvements to the photo they can I can at least post it in the military forum and try and get them some more leads to follow if the uniforms can be recognised. Thank you for your help.
