I am Thomas Morrison's granddaughter (George Morrison is my great grandfather). I live in New Zealand.
My husband posted the request for George Morrison Rings end.
Thanks so much for the fantastic amount of information you have given me.
I am also interested in any Information you may get on George Morrisons father who was John Morrison. I don't know his mothers name at all.
The Gould information is relevant to me also.

Thanks again  Val

Hi

I am looking for any information regarding George Morrison and Elizabeth McMullan who were married 27th January 1876 at the Presbyterian Church in Ringsend, Londonderry. They had 5 children, Elizabeth, Thomas, Martha, Letita and David that I know of. Any information would be appreciated.

Unfortunately there is no indication on the passenger list as to who they could have been with. On one list they are listed as T & A Jones, on the other separately as Thomas Jones and Andrew Jones. I agree that they seem young to be travelling alone, but so far they are the only Thomas and Andrew Jones that I have been able to locate travelling from England to Australia between 1850 and 1860.
The information I have is that they arrived in new Zealand from England in 1861 after spending some time in Australia.

regards and thanks

Your comment is quite correct, I was previously unaware of that piece of information and will need to keep it in mind.

Essie

The family had always understood that Andrew came from Australia, this understanding was supported by Andrew's death registration which noted Sydney as his place of birth, the informant being Henry, Andrew's eldest son. However a copy Mary Christina's (Andrew's daughter) has been obtained and this shows Andrew's birth place as "near Plymouth, Devonshire, England". In that Andrew himself is noted as the informant on the birth registration, the thinking now is that he came from England to New Zealand via Australia.

Many thanks to you both for your interest.

Hi JM

I have to plead guilty to the error. I have checked my records and notes and I have failed to distinguish between what is recorded on the headstone and what is recorded in the council records. I will need to go back and check again. Unfortunately the cemetery and the council records are at the other end of the country and it will be some time before I am down that way again. (I am relatively new to all this and am slowly learning to not only record the information but also clearly record the source details as well.)

However if the headstone came from Marsh, Roat & Co  Melbourne, it would indicate that there is some link between Thomas and Australia.

thanks for your assistance and interest

In answer to your questions please note the following.

The Intention to Marriage details are:
Andrew Jones, Bachelor, Carrier, aged 26, resides Waikouaiti, 2 years residency.
Mary Gunn, Spinster, aged 23, resides Waikouaiti, 14 years residency.

Marriage details are:
Dated 30 December 1863
Andrew Jones, age 26, carrier, bachelor, usual residence Waikouaiti, no birthplace recorded.
Mary Gunn, aged 23, Spinster, usual residence Waikouaiti, no birthplace recorded.
Witnesses to Marriage: Charles Hubbard and Charles McGregor.
(Charles Hubbard operated a grocery business in Sowburn in 1965. Sowburn is located inland from Waikouaiti some distance away). (Other information suggests that his grocery store was named "Sowburn")
(Charles McGregor was a farmer in the Waikouaiti/Palmerston area. He died in 1908).

Thomas Jones
Death notice in Otago Daily Times 31 August 1869 reads:
On the 28th August, at his residence, Corner Bush, Merton, Mr Thomas Jones, aged 33 years, deeply regretted.
Merton is about five miles south of Waikouaiti

Thomas’ headstone reads:
In memory of Thomas Jones, died 28 August 1869, aged 33 years", and a fairly lengthy piece of wording "Blessed are the dead............................end in large reward".

The council record shows that the plot was purchased by "Jones" and the headstone was by "Marsh, Roat & Co Melbourne".
(Thomas is the only person buried in the plot).

I have ordered a copy of the death registration but as yet have not received it.

A Thomas  and Andrew Jones travelled from Australia to Otago aboard the "Aurifera" arriving August 1861. The date matches the 2 years residency noted on the Intention to Marry details.

regards and thanks

Many thanks for your interest.

I have 4 certificates relating to Andrew, 2 give a birth year of 1835 and 2 give 1837. I have a death certificate for Thomas which gives his date of birth as 1836.

Henry was definitely Andrew's first child born 1864, followed by William Gunn in 1866, James Andrew in 1870 and Mary Christina in 1877.

Many thanks for the interest

I am seeking a Thomas and Andrew Jones who came to NZ from England via Australia. Both Thomas and Andrew are buried in the Waikouaiti cemetery. They both travelled to NZ from Australia in 1861. The information I have from death, marriage, children's birth certificates, etc., indicate that they were close to the same age with Andrew probably 1 yr older than Thomas. Thomas never married, as far as I know, he died in 1869 and Australia is mentioned on his headstone.
I am looking at the possibility that the Thomas and Andrew who travelled on the Condor 10 1850 are the same Thomas and Andrew who came to NZ in 1861.
