No problem Olivia, here's another photo I've found that may be of interest to you.

I think that the woman at the back of the picture is Mary Jackson, possibly your great-great grandmother? The girl on the left is Mollie Jackson (Mary's daughter, I believe?) . My grandfather William Stevenson is holding his daughter Mollie and the other two women are his mother, Jane, and his first wife Mary.

Hi there.

My grandfather was Andrew Stevenson, William's son.

William's father was James Stevenson, a ploughman, and his mother was Jane nee NcNaught (from Williams marriage cert to Jane Coltart in 1886. Both parents seem to be alive at the time of this wedding.

His birth is recorded OPR Births 870/0020 0059 Kirkbean in 1848.

William Gibson lawful of James
Stevenson and Jean McNight
Tallawhairn. Born 21st Baptised 28th June by Rev T Graham

Tallawhain is, I think, actually Tallowquhairn (OS grid ref. NX 992 584)

I believe that he had the nickname of "Red Rob" because of the colour of his hair and I think he died ~1925.
I don't have any other information available yet. But here's a photo of him with his wife Jane and my grandfather Andrew, probably taken in the early 1900's

Hi there Jeanette,

I gather that your great-grandfather, William Baird Dunbar was my grandfather's (Joseph Tweedie Dunbar) brother.

I think that George (their father) was probably been burried in Johnstonebridge in Dumfriesshire but I'm not 100% certain.

I have George's marriage cert, death cert, census returns, if you PM me with your email address I'd be able to forward these onto you, along with any other info I have.

Kevin

Hi there.

Well I've found George in the 1861 census on ScotlandsPeople ( or George Dimbar as they have him indexed as!).

No sign of his parents though. He's listed as a boarder in the house of a Mary McRobert. However the good thing is that Mary's mother is also in the house, and she is Esther Gordon aged 50. I assume then that Esther is George's grandmother.

No sign of George's father, James, though, at least not in Kirkcudbright.

I'm speculating the George's mother, Elizabeth Gordon died when he was young, possibly even in childbirth as I haven't been able to find a death cert. I know that she was deceased by the time of his marriage in 1876 and I have not been able to find her death on ScotlandsPeople.

As to his father still no further along. I believe that it is the James that I found on the 1851 census, but even if it is that puts up another stumbling block as James' father Joseph, is listed as being born in Ireland.

So unless I can find more information or have a sudden burst of inspiration, then I guess that's as far back as I can go with the Dunbars.

Does the marriage cert give his mothers name? You could try looking him up on FamilySearch.org with his parents names, it may bring something up, or even just his parents names to find possible siblings.

Have you found him on any of the other censuses? They may give different ages for him, I'd allow for more than a years leeway either side. Also his childrens names could give you a few clues as well.

My great-grandfather, George Dunbar, was also in Kirkgunzeon in 1881, working as a railway surfaceman. Who knows. maybe the knew each other!

A search on the 1851 D & G Census shows two Hunters in Tinwald. Helen,22 in the house of John Pattie, and more interestingly Robert Hunter, 30.

Searching Roberts address shows his wife Sarah Black, 32 and his daughter, Mary S Black,1. Is it possible that these are your Roberts parents? All three were born at Kirkmahoe. The address is Shaws(849), household 4/23.

Hopefully this may be of some help to you.

Thanks for that Elaine, I never even thought of trying a different search engine!

Kind of dissapointed though, tuilzeing is such a great word, I thought it would mean something more juicy- especially with the Gives satisfaction :)
