Northumberland / Re: Robert Hunter and Jane Barnes

Thanks for your reply.  Having spent a number of years looking for the family of George Hunter; I am still quite sure that he is the son or at very least related to Jane Hunter (née Barnes).

From the Families In British India Society (FIBIS) database, there is the record of George Hunter from Massoorie (likely to be a typographical error for Mussoorie) who is the son and heir of Jane Barnes who died 22 Apr 1868 in Aberdeen.  My great x3 grandfather lived in Mussoorie in 1868 and Mussoorie was much smaller than it is now.  The population of Mussoorie was between 2-3 thousand as one needed a permit to be able to live in the town.  As far as I am aware, my George Hunter was the only George Hunter living in Mussoorie at that time and should therefore be the person mentioned in the FIBIS record.

The FIBIS record states that Jane Hunter (née Barnes) died one day after your Jane Hunter.  With just one day difference between the recorded dates, I believe the FIBIS entry maybe a transcription error.  I have come across this situation before and considering some of the other evidence, I believe that this is the same person.  For example the marriage certificate of George Hunter shows George's father was Robert Hunter and your Jane Barnes was married to a Robert Hunter.

It would also appear that although George started out on his own in India, he became quite successful and even tutored Maharajah Duleep Singh.  The Maharajah resided at the Castle in Mussoorie, the house on top of Castle Hill.  The house belonged to Mr. Henry Vansittart, the second husband of Mary Amelia Dobbie, who happens to be the ex wife of William Jervis (my great (x4) grand/great uncle).  George Hunter owned the Belleville estate which, when he married Catherine Jervis, was bought by the town and became the Town Hall.  George then resided at Sylverton house with his family until his death in 1886.  The Sylverton house remained in the family until at least 1919.

If you would like to know more about George and his descendents then please just drop me a line.

Hi Josie, I think the George Hunter that you have mentioned is my great (x3) grandfather.  Further information can be found here at RootsChat and at Ancestry.  I don't know if you will have seen this entry at FIBIS which names George's mother as Jane Barnes of Aberdeen?

A Robert Hunter was buried 23 Jul 1842 at St. Peters Cemetery, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.  Could this be Jane's husband?  I believe Jane was buried at the same cemetery 27 Apr 1868.

My father is a lawyer (probate) so I'll ask him about getting hold of a few wills.  Thanks  :)

I've no idea, sorry.  The two Hunter brothers both studied at Glasgow University so I used Glasgow as a starting point.  In the early 1800s it mainly offered degrees in theology and the arts which looked promising.  Unfortunately records are patchy pre 1858 and no graduation details exist for a George Hunter.

The birth date is an estimate from the age at marriage; his wife was only 21.  He may well have been married previously but I have nothing to go on.  As for his professor status, either professor is synonymous with teacher or George had delusions of grandeur ;)

Unfortunately I do not even know which area of Glasgow George came from.  His birth location of Glasgow is only seen in the death register.  As the grave reference is given, I would have thought that the information has been gathered from the headstone.  Hopefully someone here will descend from the same Hunter/Jervis family.

*Update*  I've browsed Google books and I've found a music related link between a Mr. Hunter and Rev. Maddock’s Mussoorie School.  Unfortunately it became the Savoy Hotel in 1902 so I doubt any records exist.  There are two other links suggesting George was the Mussoorie music master.  See here and here.

I have dug out the marriage entry to see if there are any other clues.  George is listed as a bachelor and Catherine was a spinster.  The two fathers are given as Robert Hunter and Thomas Septimus Jervis.  The two witnesses were Capt. T.S. Jervis and Henry Hankow (?), Mussoorie librarian.

George Hunter, born Glasgow c1823, arrived in Calcutta Sep 1842 on the ship Isabel. According to the shipping list and marriage cert., he was a professor of music. He married Catherine Jervis, daughter of Capt. Thomas Septimus Jervis, 10 May 1871 in Mussoorie. He died 8 Sep 1886 in Mussoorie after fathering 6 children.

Family legend suggests that George is related to the anatomists John & William Hunter. Can you help prove/disprove a link to the Hunters of Hunterston? The only other information that I have is that his marriage cert. shows his father is Robert Hunter and the family lived at the Sylverton in Mussoorie, India.

Children:
George Jervis Hunter (12 Apr 1872 - 1917)
Kate Jane Hunter (4 Jun 1873 - 7 May 1874)
 - Baptism record lists George's profession as a teacher of music
Edith Frances Hunter (23 Aug 1874 - 14 Mar 1901)
 - Baptism record lists George's profession as a teacher of music
Robert William Hunter (25 Sep 1875 - 1878)
Isabel Maude Hunter (29 May 1877 - ?)
 - Baptism record lists George's profession as a house proprietor
John St. Vincent Jervis-Hunter (27 Jul 1880 - 9 Dec 1917)
 - Baptism record lists George's profession as a house proprietor

NB George's widow appears on the 1891 census living at 14 High View Road, Upper Norwood, Surrey.  She returned to India shortly after the census.

Any information that could help me to identify George's parents would be most welcome.  So far, I haven't managed to locate him on the 1841 Scottish census.

any descendents of Charles HUntley b.1856 in Frome, his fathers name was Hillman and not married to his mtoher Matilda Huntley

I am also a descendant and countryrose is my auntie ;D  I started to look in to the Huntley/Lawrence side of the family 6 months ago so I haven't managed to get very far either.  I do have a tree created with Family tree Maker which is available by clicking here.

Having checked though the GRO Index I have found the following:

Emily Adelaide E. Huntley
b. 25 Jun 1907 (Sep 1907 Hitchin 3a 797)
m. Dec 1927 Hitchin 3a 1794 to James Pettengell
d. Dec 1993 Hitchin 21H 63

Edward George Charles Huntley
b. Mar 1909 Hitchin 3a 739
m. Dec 1932 Hitchin 3a 2006 to Elizabeth Kitchener
d. Dec 1966 Hitchin 4b 205

Frederick William Huntley
b. 04 Mar 1911 (Jul 1911 Hitchin 3a 796)
m. Dec 1934 Hitchin 3a 2384 to Nellie Kitchener
d. Jun 1977 Hitchin 10 0504

I have a suspicion that they are Arthur George Huntley & Emily Elizabeth Underwood's children.  Can anyone confirm this?  If not, I'll apply for the certificates.  The two Kitchener girls are more than likely sisters as both births have Grimes listed as the mother's maiden name in the GRO Index.  I've also found a Lilian Violet M. Huntley b. 26 Feb 1916 with mother's maiden name listed as Underwood.

Thank you ever so much Velda.  I've been looking myself but I couldn't find anything.  If you were here now I'd give you a big hug!!

I have access to the birth marriage and death indexes at the local library so I'll take a look tomorrow morning.  I'll be sure to update you if I find the reference  ;D

Just to update you all the marriage certificate arrived this afternoon. The details are:

John Johnson (27) Mariner from 5 Alton Street. Father is Lawrence Johnson (deceased), a rigger.

Mary Ann Curle (20) from 41 Goodly Street. Father is John Edward Curle, a mariner.

It would appear they got married on 13 July 1875 at the Church of St Thomas in Stepney.

Whilst the father’s name is Lawrence, which would fit with the information I already have, his surname is Johnson.  Maybe this wasn’t such a good line to follow for a relatively new comer to genealogy!
