Hello Jean, good to hear back from you.  I live in Canada and we had what I hope will be the last snowstorm of the season over the weekend; we are looking forward to spring!

These are my ideas about investigating whether or not our Cockerill families are the same one or not:

- Being that my gggggrandfather William Cockerill is a brickwall for me, as your gggggrandfather John is for you, they do come from the same general area and the same era, and the children of both carry the same first names  which can be a good indicator of the names of earlier generations, I would like to work with you to see if each of our family lines are one and the same, or not.  I hope to find that they are brothers or cousins.

These are a couple of my current thoughts on how we might go about doing this, being that documented records for both cannot be found to date:

1. I would send you a list of my William's early descendants for your information to help you to follow who we are talking about when working through individual family members.  I would need your e-mail address to do that. Also, similar information from you, if it isn't a lot of extra work for you to do, would help me to do the same.  This seems like a good starting point for us. I would also appreciate whatever information you have about your John and also about the Richard you mentioned who married Elizabeth Wingrave in 1801, Richard possibly a brother or a cousin to one/ both of them??

2. Do you know of any current living male descendants of your gggggrandfather John Cockerill who would want to participate in the Cockerill DNA study that has been done  and includes my branch of the Cockerill family and also of the Lancashire branch of the Cockerill family? That alone would determine if your branch is the same as either of those that have already taken part in it, and we would know if we're the same family or not.

3. Do you know of any direction connection the Cockerill family has with the one spelled Cotterill?  I ask this because there are no Cockerill's in the area my gggggrandtather William lived in, but there are many Cotterill's recorded there and so I'm wondering if this is a point in time where the spelling changed??

Thanks again for all your time and attention with this!

Mary

Yes, you are right - his history was indeed chequered. You found this information much more quickly than I did!  He was married in Bavaria on one of his trips there with racehorses; his wife Anna was from Pfaffenhofen, Bavaria where their oldest son, also William, was born in 1849.  Anna died young in 1856 when their family was very young (they had 3 children - William, Anna Marie and Emily Anne b. 1854 - Emily being my ggrandmother).  For some reason, William 1802 did not raise his children after his wife died - his sister, Anne Burrows also of Tardebigge, raised them.  My ancestors thought that Wm. had died at an early age as well, I have only recently discovered that he lived to be quite a good old age in fact.
I also find no formal record of William's birth in 1802 - this information was recorded by family records only as June, 1802. I also find no record for Wm's parents - this is the point in my research that I approached you, in the hope that your John may have been a brother to my William and thus making that connection, but it wasn't to be that easy.  Good luck with your further research for your family,
Mary

Yes, it would be quite a big coincidence that our Perkins families would both be from this area if not related. I research each of my great-grandparents family lines, but unlike the others, this Perkins line has died out except for my own siblings and children, and I am most interested in recording it so that it isn`t forgotten with time. My William Perkins (gggrandfather) was a veterinarian who travelled western Europe with the racehorses of Sir Thomas Millbanke and of Tom Lane - he lived quite a high life!  If I can be of assistance to your research, I would be most happy to do so, and also to try to discover earlier family members with you.

Thank you for your reply.  It does appear that we are researching different Perkins families, as mine most certainly came from Tardebigge at the time period c.1800.  If however you find evidence in the future that our lines may connect, I would be most happy to work with you on it.

Thank you for your quick reply!  I  only know for certain as far as William b. abt. 1760, and would very much like to find his parents, siblings, etc.  He married Martha Talbot Feb. 2, 1789 at Brewood, Staffordshire, England and they had 3 children:  John (1789) William (1791) and a daughter Frances (1792).  I do not know if Frances married or any of her descendants, but I do know of John and William's - a very large family.  A DNA project has also been done on this line.  We know that William came to Staffordshire from another area in England, but haven't been able to definately connect him to another Cockerill family. The DNA project proved that our line is different from the Lancashire ones who went on to develop the big Steel Mill in Belgium.
You mention the Cotterill name - is this known to be connected to your Cockerill line?
I would be happy to work with you in any way that could assist either of us.

Sorry, the above message should have read:  Did John Perkins and Ann Adams have another son named William b. 1802 in Tardebigg?  I descend from Wm. and have extensive information on this family.  Thank you.

I too am researching the Perkins family of Worcestershire, which I have traced back to William Perkins, born 1802 in Tardebigg.  Do you know if William is another son of John and Jane's?  I would be grateful for any information you may be willing and able to provide.  Thank you.

Hello Jean:
Do you know of Frances' father John's siblings?  I have extensive information about  William Cockerill's descendants of this same era from this area, however I do not know if these family lines are connected or not.  I would be very interested to examine this with you.  Thank you.
