I know. I've found multiple family trees listing an ancestor here in America before any settlers actually arrived. and they all just copied it from one another.....  (apparently without reading any history books!! ;D)

Ireland / Cornelius and Ellen Cain
« on: Thursday 06 December 12 01:42 GMT (UK)  »
Another Irish mystery - Can anyone find Cornelius Cain, born in Ireland, early 1800s. Lived in Malone, NY, USA: DOB on census recs 1850-1880 vary from born 1816 to 1833, I suspect it's abt 1823. Married Ellen,  her DOB: 1824-1830. Mult kids b. in US Catherine, Zebia, Ellen, Mary, Walter, Marcus Cain between 1854-1856). In 1850, Michael Kaine (b. 1810) and Patrick Kain (b. 1810) also had families in neighborhood. I know this is VERY little to go on...

I'm wondering if someone took the death record off the family tree, also - I'm going to contact the tree owner and see if he'll share the source of his info. THat's probably also where 'Northern Ireland' comes from, cause it's on his tree. I'll report back....

Hi, thank you. Yes, I've made a half-hearted attempt at immigration records, but not knowing where she came from or what her port of entry was (or even if she was married before she came over) I havent found anything. And I'm afraid I'm not going to subscribe to paid sites since I'm a mongrel and have ancestors from all over Europe - cost would be prohibitive!!  :-[  But I have fun poking around the edges when I can. At least Ireland/Scotland/England they're all in English!! (So far)
Thanks for the Northern Ireland tip.

I'm afraid that's all I know about her roots. She married Ellis Greenhalgh from Lancashire, England and I know all the kids, but I'm afraid I can't even find a marriage record. I can only find her on 1 US Census rec, and don't know why the family isn't showing up earlier than 1880, since kids were born in Massachusetts in 1850s.
Thanks for the info, tho, it's the first time I've attempted finding anything in Ireland.
