New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: James WHITAKER of Whangaroa *COMPLETED*
« on: Tuesday 10 April 12 06:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi Marcus,

Isabella Whittaker is my 4 x great-grandmother.  I have a print out of her death certificate, her name having two ts rather than one on the print out.  She is supposedly buried at Purewa but online there are no records of her burial.  She married Lewis Davis Bickerton when she was 17 in Napier (around 1871).

The print out says Isabella's parents were James Whittaker and Betty Hineraria.

You've said that you have a copy of James' death certificate, I wonder if you could scan me a copy?

Also, I have no documentation regarding Betty.  Other than what I've seen on rootschat.com I can't find any reference to her existence.  The purpose of my search is to find documentation showing my iwi whakapapa to prove what iwi I am.  Without it I won't ever be able to find my iwi.

Is there anyway you could help me in finding more about Betty and her iwi?

Cheers

Scott

Thanks a lot for your help.

I think the Maori name is Peti rather than Betty.

In regards to 'non-existing' it's because I can't find documents on her anyway, I'm sure she did I just can't find proof.

Will keep looking

Cheers

Hi again,

Thank you for the support in such quick replies.  I've been able to find the death in BDM and you're definitely right about her age and birth.

I haven't been able to find an intention to marry between James and Betty, nor that Betty ever existed apart from in relation to Isabella's birth.  There also seems to be no support that she was a daughter of Te Wherowhero.  I'd love to find her lineage and I'll be stopping by the archives next week but I fear that her life might be relatively unrecorded.

Cheers

Hi there,

I've been working on my family tree and I've been able to get documents all the way up to Isabella Whitaker who married Lewis Davies Bickerton.  Her parents were (supposedly) James Whitaker and Peti Hineraro (a.k.a. Betty Whitaker).  And Peti's father was (supposedly) Potatau Te Wherowhero however I have found not a single document supporting the relationship between Peti and her supposed daughter and Te Wherowhero and Peti.

Is anyone able to help me here?

Hi Marcus,

I have been researching my family tree recently and I have found that Lewis Davies (David?) Bickerton is my great, great, great grandfather.  In BDM it says that Isabella Bickerton died in 1927 aged 73 which seems right if she was born in 1954 and married Lewis.  But I have no documents of their marriage, or Isabella's birth to Peti Hineraro Potatau Te Wherowhero, or Peti's birth to Potatau Te Wherowhero.

Are you able to help me with the actual documents and authentication of this?  If I find documents then I can legitimately register to my iwi (Ngaati Maniapoto) and hapuu (Ngaati Mahuta).

Cheers

Scottie
