Checking the 1911 census the form completed by Albert Hadland shows he lived in – Willscote – which is still there and is at the junction of what is Horseshoe Lane and what was then known as Elm Lane. It was and remains a school house. There are then several houses referring to them being in College Road – all seemingly labourers’ houses – before the addresses change to being The Common. On the official summary books all houses individually labelled as “College Road” are listed as being in Horseshoe Lane, so it may have been “College Road” was what they were unofficially known as.
The 1891 census has no reference to Horseshoe lane but does to College Road!
I will check the Cranleigh School records and see what references it throws up as there should be something buried in there.
