In the 1901 census he's 45 which would make him 60 ish in WW1.  A bit old for horsebreaking.

So are you saying that he had already been to Australia and returned to Ireland by 1901?

Wicklow / Re: Lavery in Wicklow Town.

Many thanks for your help regarding the Lavery family.  It has cleared up a mystery for me.  Thanks also for the additional information regarding the Parkers.  I had found the details on the census and with the assistance of a couple of other generous Wicklow RootsChatters have managed to get quite a few details of this family.

The only thing which still eludes me is the death of their mother Catherine Parker (nee Chapman).  There are no death entries on the civil registrations which match with her.  I've bought a few certificates hoping but no match as yet.  Perhaps she died between the birth of her youngest son Peter in 1862 and before civil registration began.

Wicklow / Lavery in Wicklow Town.

I have a solicitors letter which mentions a Mrs. Lavery  looking after my great uncle between about 1937 and 1944 in Wicklow town.

There are Laverys living in Market Square on the 1911 census.  Does anyone have directories or knowledge of a Lavery family living in Wicklow around that time.

Wicklow / Re: Parents of Benjamin Henry Chapman, born 1820 in Wicklow

Hello Erato,

I've some correspondence with a descendant of Benjamin R. Chapman (b 1813) the eldest child of Benjamin Chapman and Martha Richardson.

The other children were John         1815
                                    Henry        1817
                                    Catherine  1821   my G.G. grandmother
                                    Ann           1824

I've just had a quick look through my notes and found one his emails contained the following information...............

" Their sister, Anne Chapman Johnston, also came to Minnesota from
Ireland about 1873, or so.  Only siblings Catherine and John stayed in Ireland."

And from a letter written about 1930 by Catherine Parker who would have been around 80 at the time of writing. Catherine was the daughter of Catherine Chapman

"The flower of Ireland leave her for foreign lands.  A great many go to America.  I do not hear from any of my Mother's family in America now.  There must be crops of them there.  One branch went to Canada."

By the way I did make it to Ecuador last November as part of a 6 week trip around South America.

Have you tried contacting the museum in Bullcreek W.A.  -   link listed below.

http://www.raafawa.org.au/museum/index.html

As there is a number on the back of the RAAF badge they may be able to give you an idea of how this can be traced.

Their email address on their website is  museum@raafawa.org.au

If my memory serves me right (and it doesn't very often these days) Jews and Quakers were able to keep their own records and were not forced to use the Church of England for baptisms etc.

Hi Kate

These books are held at W.A.G.S in Bayswater they could be of interest to you.

The journal of Henry Sewell, 1853-7

From Pebmarsh to the Swan : a history of one branch of the Sewell family of Great Henny Essex,

Goomalling, a backward glance

My mistake about granny being a Sewell on checking I see she was a Wansborough.   Not a lot of choice of partners in the early days so the pioneer families all seem to be related somehow.

With a bit of luck you might even find you have an Aunt Rose (Hancock that is)

Hi Kate,

Sewell, Parker, Wyborn -  all very old W.A. names from the wheatbelt area.

My son-in-law has these names in his family.  I think his grandmother was a Sewell from around Northam.  I bet someone has written books on these families so it could be worth checking at the State Library of W.A.

Having had a quick look at the WW11 airforce records on the National Archives of Australia website I found 3 Macleans who were born in W.A.

Is there a service number on the medals by any chance?
