Thank you Spikey68 ad t mo for the very helpful replies.

I certainly do appreciate the gift, I have my grandfathers WW2 medals and great-uncle's WW1 medals and my grandmother's SWB so this is a great addition to a family history collection that I really treasure and a great opportunity to find out more about a relative I never knew.

I'll definitely be sending off for her service record.

Thanks again!

Hello,

I received an amazing present from my godmother today, her mother's medals! a 1939-45 War Medal and a Defence Medal. Plus a photograph of her mother in uniform.

It turns out she doesn't know very much about her mum's war service other than she drove an ambulance so I'm hoping some knowledgeable people out there can give me some information from this photo of her in (ATS?) uniform.

Thanks for looking!

I was assuming his name would go on the screen wall as there are spaces available. It's a shame nothing can be done about the existing family headstone but at least the details have been recorded so it hasn't been lost as so many others have.

I would have guessed Sanatorium as he died of TB but a quick query on the Liverpool & SW Lancs FHS forum has provided the information that the 1911 census shows Belfayre to be a private residence on Jubilee Road, Formby.
I suppose it could have been a small nursing home in 1916 or the house of a family member, I know we don't need to know but it's always nice to fill in details!

Good to know he's eligible, thanks for the update.  :)

Hi all,
I was just about to start a non-commemoration query on the GWF for William Porter but came across your thread, if you've got it covered I'll drop it!

I don't have any further information for you but would add that, as I understand it, the record posted by Radcliff (copied below) is from the actual burial records so this is W Porter's grave, not just an inscription.

William Porter
aged 27 years
a salesman
abode Belfayre Jubilee Formby
22nd April 1916
conformist section c grave 748

I'm remembering stories I was told as a child here but I think my Grandma told me that she was working in a plotting room when the station was bombed, she was buried under rubble and some other people in the room with her were killed. She developed what I think was some sort of anaemia from the trauma and was given a disability pension which she never drew. The doctors said she wouldn't work again but she became a clippy on the buses and worked various jobs until she retired.

I'll ask around the family for more reliable information and get that application in for her records

My grandma's name was Irene Etherington

Unfortunately not Kate although I will be seeing all the family over Christmas and will be asking questions. I'll get back to you if I find out anything.
Many thanks
