It looks as though a block of the Hexham licences from the early 1710s are no longer in the archives.

Both York and Durham are online but the licences appear in neither.

Northumberland / Missing Licences in Hexham

I am currently transcribing the Hexham marriage registers for FreeReg and have come across a frustrating phenomenon.

In the early 1700s there are many severely ripped pages giving only partial details, however dozens of them have 'married by vertue of a Licence'.

I thought that checking the marriage licences would allow me to fill in the missing details such as the names of the grooms, however none of the names appear in the Durham marriage licences database on Family Search. I also checked the York marriage licence database on FindMyPast but they don't appear there either.

Can anyone suggest where these licences might appear?

Thanks for that comprehensive reply. This is the only use of Latin that I've found in this register (I've been transcribing it from 1558).

This is an entry from the baptismal register of St Nicholas Newcastle in 1596.

The final word appears to say 'Aliis' [Latin for 'Others'] however there is a horizontal stroke above the word which suggests that it is a contraction.

Can anyone suggest what the full word might be?

1589. There are many Carrs in the register but the name is invariably spelt as ‘Carr’.

I think you may be right about wedow.

Whilst transcribing to registers of the parish of St Nicholas, Newcastle upon Tyne I came across a surname I'm having difficulty with.

To me the name looks like Katheren Carwes. Can anyone help?

I also vote for Engraver of Music.

Thanks everyone, this site is so useful for transcribers!
