Thank you for that, but I have no idea about any of those things I'm afraid and I've used every format of the name I could think of. So I guess that's a 'give up now while I'm still sane'.
Thanks for the infor about civil registration though, i didn't know that.

I have to say thanks to Weste for jogging my memory about the crem holding all the records, I had forgotten that and have been trying to find where my father was buried in Glasgow.

I don't know if you made contact yet or not but I do have personal experience of this and found I had a half sister I knew nothing about. I wasn't aware of another sibling but through some unexplained papers and an off the cuff remark from my gran, who wouldn't then say any more, I decided it was worth investigating. All I had to go on was an address of a farm and the name of my mother's first husband. I wrote a short letter explaining that I was researching into my family history and was writing to everyone of that surname in that area (only 12 people). Eventually, last of all my half sister replied and the contact was made.
I agree with everything that has been said by other posters, the SAE is a great idea and not being specific about him being your brother is also good, it may make him more curious rather than shocked, if he doesn't know.
Also, everyone has given good comments on the outcomes which could happen. The only warning I would give is from my own point of view. Our first meeting went very well, we met half way between our homes at a pub for lunch (with our husbands). After more meetings it became clear that we had nothing in common and she craved more attention from and of my family, than we were prepared to give. We don't see each other any more and only exchange cards, the good thing to come out of it was that she got to meet our mother before she died.
I hope for your sake that it works, I was so excited about having a sister, but be prepared that it may not, although I would say keep that thought well in the background, because it's more likely to work out than not. Good Luck  :)

Antrim / Annabella McGinnes, Belfast 1824??
« on: Wednesday 31 July 13 13:48 BST (UK)  »
It is my understanding that my great great grandmother Annabella McGinnes was born in Belfast in around 1824 (I may have missed out a 'great' there). She married Andrew Aitken in about 1840. I have been trying for several years to track her down in Ireland but can find no trace of her, or any famiy of that name. Am I flogging a dead horse here do you think, are all the records destroyed? I have all I need on her after her marriage, although I can't find any proof of that either, but would like to track down her earlier life and family. I hope that someone can help me with this.

Thanks again William, I will give that site a go. You asked for dates for the children as of the 1922 census, Leonard was 15, Christina 12 and Hector 6, Lawerance was 9 on the 1901 census and Sarah was 7. I know that Leonard went to America ans eventually died there in 1965 (I think). Lawerance I think went to New Zealand and of course my grandmother Christina, Australia, I don't know what happened to Sarah or Hector, in fact I only discovered him this week. I'm wondering if the spelling of Lawerance's name is correct, or if that was just a mistake on the census collectors part. :-\

Thanks William, one of those trees is probably mine and a lot of the others have cherry picked from my tree  :) I have lots of info from his marriage onward, though not of his children, it's before that that I want to find out about. The fact that they were married in Motherwell was confusing as well, as they didn't seem to live there. The address seems to be of a private house and of course could have been the Manse, but it all seems to have been re-developed now. I've been trying to find an old map of the area from Lanarkshire FHS but they all seem to be modern, but only started that today, so maybe I haven't looked that far.

Thank you William, I tried to get onto Family Search earlier but even though I had just registered, they told me my pass word wasn't correct. It does sound like it could be him. I'll look up the dates for the children and post again.

Aberdeenshire / Alexander Robertson 1865

I've hit a brick wall with this one and people tell me there's no hope of tracing him. Alexander Robertson was my great grandfather I have his marriage cert which tells me he was born in Aberdeen and his mother's name was Christina Robertson, father unknown. He was married in Motherwell to SarahAnn Taylor and they had six children, five living. except for my grandmother Christina, who went to Australi and her brother Leonard who went to America, I know nothing of the others, although I think Lawerance (strange spelling)may have gone to New Zealand. There was also a Sarah and Hector. If anyone can give me any hints on this I would be very gratefull.  :)
