Scotland / Why would an OPR birth record have been crossed out?
« on: Thursday 10 May 12 13:41 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone explain what might have happened below?

OPR birth records for Kelso in 1769.  First entry is commenced and then crossed out.

"John Lamb and Isabel Allon his spouse had"

Next entry is written in full but has a large cross over this entry and the one above.

"Tho's Lamb and Isabel Allon his spouse had a son born on 17th & baptised on the 27th of April by the name of Alexander Witnesses John Atchison & James Cranston"

Next entry is similar but has different details.

"Thomas Lamb & Isabell Allan his spouse had a son named John born on the 17th & baptised the 23rd day of April 1769 Witnesses John Atchison & James Cranston"

Seems fathers name in the first entry is incorrect and the entry is started again.  Second entry is crossed out with third entry amending the sons name and the baptism date, and is written in a different hand to the first two entries.

So, any ideas on these vagaries of record keeping?  Problem for me is that the son Alexander in the second entry is the one I'm looking for and is listed in other record sources quoting this OPR.  Can this entry be believed or trusted??  I have found family tree entries quoting the third entry son John along with other children so seems valid.  Thanks.

Might have made a bit of a mix-up then.  I've just done a bit of a search and it comes up as Clockwell Street Methodist Church (Primitive Methodists) so my mistake.

So, now I'm looking for Methodist ministers of the period. ::)

I emailed the Methodist Church head office and their historical centre but neither responded at all.  I hadn't thought of the phone directory and not sure where to locate this?  I was sort of hoping someone might have a list of Ministers of the period which might verify the family story.

My Great Grandmother was Elizabeth Loyd/Lloyd born Alnwick in 1869.  About the time I'm interested in she would have been Elizabeth Lamb living at 48 Clockwell Street, Southwick (previously Elizabeth Gibson in her first marriage).  She had a brother John born about 1868 and Thomas born about 1872 but both were colliery workers and not sure if a vocational change was likley.  Might have been some other relation that was the Minister??

I have been told that my Great Grandmothers brother, ??? Lloyd was a Minister in the Clockwell St Methodist Church in the 1920s/30s.  Does anyone have any records that might confirm this or provide any more detail?  Thanks.

My Great Grandfather John Lamb was injured in the Pickersgill Shipyard accident of 22 July 1926.  Suffered concussion but didn't seek medical attention and remained ill until his death in 1935.  A gangway collapsed on the SS Cairnglen killing Frederick Crossley Eggleston, Robert Galloway and William Young.  Article in Sundeland Echo from 23 July 2008 by Sarah Stoner about this accident.

G'day Steve,  Not a bad result for my first post on Rootschat!

I have John born in 1872 but Matthew born 1877 so definately brothers - looking forward to comparing notes.  I need a couple more posts to get Private Messaging working here but I'll shoot you an email address soon.

John worked at Pickersgill Shipyards and his unfortunate claim to fame is that he was one of those injured in a pretty serious shipyard accident in 1926.  Two of John's sons, Fred (my Grandfather) and Frank moved to Australia, starting the family line here.

Chat when you get back.

Cheers, Mark.

Selby Lamb was also my Great Grandfather x3 so I guess we are researching the same line ;D   All the following info is based on internet searches so can't verify its accuracy unfortunately.
I too have Selby's parents as Alexander Lamb b.1769 & Jean Hogg b.1765, m.1789.  Alexanders parents as Thomas Lamb b.about 1739, 04Jan1741 or about 1748 & Isabel/Isabell/Isobel Allen/Allan/Allon b.1745, m.1764 or 1768 (the joy of possible transcription errors and rounding of dates!).
Now its gets a bit more dodgy - have Thomas Lamb's parents as Thomas Lamb and Elizabeth Penmen m.1739.  Now if this Thomas was born in 1710 then his parents might be Thomas Lamb and Mary Ker m.1709.
Unfortunately, this information is based on nothing else coming up on the searches I did and with missing records can't really trust this but might give you some names to focus on.

I would be really interested in what info you have after Selby - my lineage is Selby Lamb & Jane - Robert Lamb & Mary Ann Turnbull - John Lamb & Elizabeth LLoyd/Gibson etc, especially regards a supposed marriage between a James Lamb and Jane LLoyd (siblings of John and Elizabeth) that I can't find reference to anywhere.

Cheers.
