The Common Room / Re: Marriage by banns in Battersea 1898
« on: Saturday 04 August 12 17:40 BST (UK)  »
Thank you both for your replies.

Stan, thank you for clarifying this for me.

Barryd, I have a thread about this lady so I will attempt to insert the link. ( My IT skills are sometimes a bit wonky.)

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,583648.0.html

The reason I asked the question is because I haven't been able to find any records for great grandmother  prior to banns and subsequent marriage. I had a faint hope that brides/grooms would have been required to produce birth certificates and that would have told me that her birth was registered somewhere!

I have a lot to learn still about researching family history so your replies were very helpful.

Ecila :) :) :)

Apologies if this is a daft question but were brides and grooms required to produce evidence of identity, residence and nationality in 1898?

Am researching an elusive great grandmother so if anyone can clarify legal requirements I would be really grateful.

Many thanks

Hi

Have just taken a more careful look at the 1881 census! Thanks for pointing that out Linda. Will definitely make time to visit Mitcham.O/h's grandmother also wrote about his fine headstone in Mitcham churchyard.

Makes a change to find an ancestor who seems well-off :)

Thank you - that would be great. Ancestor is g-g-g-grandfather William Lewis, a market gardener (born about 1818 - died about 1894). It would be lovely to know anything about the house. (O/h's grandmother also said William Lewis had a butler although I couldn't find any evidence of this in censuses.)

Thanks again. :)

Surrey / Grosvenor House Fountain Place Mitcham

Hi all

Does anyone know if Grosvenor House still exists? My o/h had an ancestor living there in 1881. I have a note written by o/h's grandmother describing it as very beautiful.

Am hoping to visit Mitcham soon to search for ancestors in the Anglican church cemetery which I believe may be called St Peter and St Paul?

Any local knowledge about Grosvenor House would be greatly appreciated :)

Many thanks

Cornwall / Polruan exhibition
« on: Friday 11 May 12 09:10 BST (UK)  »
Hi

As part of the Daphne du Maurier Festival in Fowey, Polruan WI is holding an exhibition 'Looking at Polruan Long Ago.' I went a few years ago and they had photos, censuses, parish records etc. I was able to get copies of pictures (family members in old school photos).  :)

I think the exhibition starts Saturday 12th May and runs until 16th May.

Hi

Could they have married with a licence rather than banns? I believe there are documents called Bishop's Transcripts you can check.I think Cornish records could be held at Exeter?

Still on the trail. Have been looking at marriage records for Joseph Notley's siblings in case a Johnson shows up as a witness :)

Have found a potential signature ??? I'm not brilliant with computers so am not sure how to post a copy of the signature I am interested in. If anyone could look up the following record and help me decipher the surname of the first witness I would be really grateful. First name is definitely William.

Record is Ada Notley m George Bunce 12/04/1903 Borough Wandsworth
Parish Battersea St George the Martyr.

Many thanks :)
