Sussex / Re: Alfred or George Boxall? 15 year brick wall!
« on: Monday 24 February 25 21:22 GMT (UK)  »
That’s where my suspicions first arose. If Violet was telling the truth about being deserted and William leaving for Australia before she’d arrived back in the UK, that meant he couldn’t have been George’s father.

With then having no DNA links whatsoever for the Horn side of my family and then finding links that were connected that I couldn’t place on my tree; it all started to add up.

With the Boxall family heavily centred around Sussex, it makes me wonder why Violet was in Croydon (where she gave birth to George). I wonder if she met either of them on the voyage?

Sussex / Alfred or George Boxall? 15 year brick wall!
« on: Monday 24 February 25 13:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all,

I’m inching closer to a 15 year brick wall, with the help of DNA and ChatGPT (believe it or not!).

I have managed to work out that my great grandfather, as I have previously asked about (George Horn), is not the son of William Horn, despite him being listed on the birth certificate.

As mentioned, I have worked out that it is either Alfred Boxall (1870-) or George Boxall (1875-)ish, through DNA links and with ChatGPTs brain of where those links fall in the tree.

I have found quite a bit about Alfred although I struggle to see how his path would meet with Violet Kemp Horn(e)’s (new Thomson).
I cannot find much about George and even his census records have been difficult to locate. With Violet living in Scotland and then appearing to travel to Chile and later Australia, and having her son, George, in Croydon, I wonder whether it’s the latter.

Both the son of William Boxall (1842-1912) and Jane Pullen (1842-1926).
Both born in Kirdford, Sussex.
Alfred appears to marry a Lucy Till later on.

If anyone is able to assist here, that would be amazing!
Thanks in advance

Lamont has never shown up anywhere. I managed to do quite a bit of research on Violet's side but Lamont hasn't appeared yet.

George had three children. One of which is his (my grandfather), one that isn't his and one that I'm not too sure on.

I researched the Crisp family in 1911, and they are in the same area but at a different address. Nothing stood out at all.
Chas Cooper also appears with his own family in 1911.

I'm keen to know more about the Lamont family around the corner. Violet's family often used the maiden names/surnames as middle names.

There is a name that keeps popping up on DNA matches and their trees. Everyone that I cannot work out where we match has the same ancestor that pops up time and time again - William Boxall.
He was born in 1867. Compared to Violet's birth year of 1872, could this be the guy I'm hunting for?
The trees all say he was born in Kirdford, Sussex.

Never worked out why he used the name Mitchell. I assumed because of the case and because they were breaking the law, it was just a fake name used. The marriage in 1933 was nullified. Basically they lied on everything!
He is Horn on everything else. I am a Horn, so is my father, my Grandfather and when they 'remarried' properly, they use Horn and all other information on that certificate adds up.

Thank you so much avm228 for finding that information! None of those names ring a bell and I haven't seen them pop up anywhere before. I wonder how long they were there for or, if Violet was also lodging from them, if they had previously had other boarders.

I attempted to go down the route of him being adopted and/or whether George had been put into a home. Honestly, I didn't know quite know where to look, but wherever I tried, nothing showed up.
I've also tried checking all relatives on the 1911 census and didn't find George staying with any of them.

I'll try checking the address a few years later.

Thank you Mckha489!!  :)

Hello Ray,

Yes, this is the correct person! I have his birth certificate.
On the certificate, 7 Upper Grove, South Norwood, Croydon is listed as his place of birth, but it appears to be just a residential address.

Violet Kemp Horn was born in Gourock, Scotland in 1872. She marries George's supposed father, William Horn, in 1896 in Taltal, Chile. There were no children born whilst they were out there. William runs away in 1902, leaving Violet in Chile. By the time she has returned to the UK in 1902, he had apparently already left for Australia (surely ruling him out from being his actual father).
She appears at a Scottish address in Gourock/Greenock, in 1911, with just a lodger. After many, many searches, I have never found George Lamont or William on the 1911 census. She leaves for Australia in 1922 and dies there, alone in 1946. It appears William died the other end of Australia in 1915.

I have never found anything for George from his birth certificate in 1903, right up until the early 1930s, when he gets married and has his own children.

I'm hoping to find out who she is with at the time in 1903. Maybe I'm clutching at straws, but there is a whole clump of people on my DNA matches, that I cannot fit into my tree. And the same surname keeps popping up. This particular person would have been in his 30's when George was born and had children around the same time with his wife.

Violet was from Scotland and there is no reason why she is suddenly staying at a house in Croydon? It doesn't make any sense. The person in question above, lived in Sussex, not far from Croydon. And George actually spends the rest of his life in Sussex.

Best wishes
Chris

Hey all!

I'm not entirely sure where the best place to post this request, so I hope here is okay?!

I'm hoping to find out who my ancestor was living with while she was living at 7 Upper Grove, South Norwood, Croydon, UK.
My Grandfather (George Lamont Horn) was born there on the 3rd November 1903. Both of them disappear on all records after this. I'm not entirely sure how long they lived there, but his mother, Violet Kemp Horn(e), was travelling in 1902, so it wouldn't have been long before.

This address has come up on another thread and another member commented that there was nothing of interest in the house or the area.
Violet heads back up to Scotland and is living without her son in 1911. His father had moved to Australia, on his own. George doesn't reappear on any known records until the 1930s.

My question is, if this is even possible; to find out who Violet and George are living with at this address?

Thanks in advance!
Chris

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Who is living with my ancestor?
« on: Wednesday 27 November 19 06:45 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all,

I've found my ancestor, Violet Horne, living in Gourock, Scotland.
She claims to be married for 15 years (correct, although she did file for divorce 8 years earlier) and she clearly states that she has no children, which is incorrect, although that's a whole different story.

Who is living with her though in 1911? He is an engineer, born in Lanark, Glasgow.

Any help on his name would be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance
Chris
