Argyllshire / Darrochs on the island of Jura, Argyllshire
« on: Tuesday 10 September 13 22:05 BST (UK)  »
Hello List

I have found my 4 x great grandparents John Darroch and Marion (or Mary) Macdougall who lived in Ardfarnal, Jura in the early 1800s (they married in 1795 in Inverkip).  Their children were Malcolm b1802 and Archibald, Donald, Mary and Marrion.  Does anyone else have any information on Darrochs living on Jura around that time?

Many thanks.

Ruth

Hello Jo

Many thanks for your response. My connection is through Donald Darroch's older sister Margaret who married a McLachlan from Islay and ended up in Everton, Liverpool.

I will have a look at your tree.

Best wishes

Thank you. That's great. I haven't seen any pictures of him before. He doesn't look the sort to disappear!

Thanks.

Hello

Yes, he's still there in 1913  at Cort Adelersgate in Kristiania.  Looks like a nice building. He would have been 59 by then (b1854), so probably thinking about retiring from teaching.  His surname was Thurgood, so if you come across him in any of your Norway research, please let me know.

Thanks for all your help.

Ruth

Hello Mr Jan

Many thanks for your help and for responding so quickly.  I have found him in the 1910 census link you posted, teaching at the universtity in Christiania, or at least I think that's what it says.  Lektor v. Universitetet overlærer Chria. Handelsgymnasium.

No sign of him when I search in the funerals list though, so I will continue to look elsewhere.

Thanks again.

Renfrewshire / Darrochs in Greenock

Is anyone researching the Darrochs in Greenock?  My ancestor Malcolm Darroch was born in Jura c1803 and became a harbour master in Greenock in the 1860s and 1870s.  His son Duncan Darroch b1840 took on a similar role as a customs tax collector.  Does anyone else have Greenock Darrochs in their tree?

Thanks.

Hello.

Does anyone know if there is an on-line database I can search to track down an English person who was working in Christiania in the early 1900s. I think he may have died there as there are no records in the UK.

Many thanks.

Hello Lime Tree

Just wanted to say very many thanks for posting the photo of Frederick Allen. It's the first time we have come across one for this particular great great grandfather and he looks a bit like living family members! If you have any others of the family, please let me know.

I imagine by now you will have Frederick's date of death - my records have it as 7th October 1911 in Great Yarmouth.

Shortly before then, Frederick and Marian are in the 1911 census living at 3 Norfolk Square in Great Yarmouth with daughters Edith and Daisy

Best wishes
