Perthshire / Re: Belston, Methven and Auchtergaven
« on: Tuesday 24 June 14 00:25 BST (UK)  »
Hello Holly, great to get your reply. It is swings & roundabouts with Ancestry & Scotlandspeople. Each has specialist areas. Ann Paton died 18th January 1835. Peter Paton her brother , tenant at Gibbieston was appointed sole executor but seems he had died by he date of the inventory in 1844.
Legacies went to sons James, William, Andrew, & Peter with the residue to son john. Perhaps Janet pre- deceased her mother . I do not have a birth record for Janet.I have not researched further back than Ann & Andrew Paton but will check for earlier docs or wills. Although the children of Andrew b 1800 & his wife Elspeth all predeceased their parents one granddaughter Anne Paton Scott lived at Balquarn until her marriage in 1902 to Peter Ewan, blacksmith of Auchtergarven. Leases on the farms were for 19 years & if the landlord had other plans for the land & the lease was not renewed the Patons became landless peasants. Andrew & Elspeth managed to make a reasonable living on their 40 acres & Elspeth left an estate valued at  just under 4000 pounds sterling at the time of her death 12th Aug 1897.
I would be pleased to learn more about the Canadian Patons & how/when they emigrated.
Best Wishes, Lesley.

Hi Holly, My husband David Pay's Paton ancestors also trace back to Andrew & Ann Paton. He is a descendant of their son Andrew, farmer of Balwhern or Balquarn who married 1836 Elspeth RobertsonAndrew & Elspet's children prededceased them & are buried in Auchtergaven Bankfoot cemetery. The youndest dghtr Ann married John Scott in 1868. Ann died age 36  & the children were raised by Andrew & Elspeth. One grandson John Scott married 1902 Margaret Merrilees & emigrated to New Zealand which is where we enter the picture. Did you know Andrew & Ann Patons wills are available on Scotlands people? Andrews is dated 1829 & Ann's 1835 which gves info on death dates. Very good to make this mutual connection. Cheers Lesley in NZ

Archibald Wilson Lauder son of Archiibald Lauder who farmed at Toi Tois( Fortrose )married my great grandmother Elizabeth Wedge, widow of George Wedge(1860-1890). The Lauders lived at Woodlands Southland prior to moving to Invercargill. Elizabeth had 3 children from her Wedge marriage, the youngest George changed his surname to Lauder by deed poll. He was a carpenter and a sapper in WW1. George d 1961 Dunedin. Archibald & Elizabeth (nee Cossgrove) had 4 children Wilson Archibald Lauder b1894, d 1944 of T.B.,Oliver Stewart Lauder b 1896 died Battle Messines Ridge WW1,Herbert Pickens Lauder b1901 died 1922, & adopted daughter Ada Lauder b 1903 d 1954 m1928 William Wallace Tinnock.Elizabeth was active in the Salvation Army. She & Archie took in many foster children. My father (the son of Elizabeth's eldest daughter (also named Elizabeth Wedge)was named James Oliver in memory of his uncle Oliver Lauder and his brother was named Wilson Archibald. The headstone is where Archibald Wilson Lauder is buried at Invercargill Eastern Cemetery.George Wedge/Lauder married and had 4 children.

I noticed a William McKnight and an Agnes McKnight in the 1837 Pigots Directory for New Cumnock listed as  innkeepers of the Crown Hotel New Cumnock but I am uncertain if this is George and Margaret's son. At the time of William's marriage in Edinburgh in 1856 he was described as a bachelor, and the occupation of his father George was given as "farmer".William 's age on the marriage certificate is 38years . In reality he was aged 41. William and wife Mary were living at 9 Roxburgh Street St Cuthberts Edinburgh. The streets close toTthe Pleasance I understand to have been a very densely populated part of the old town back then. I have not been able to locate William in 1851 but Mary and the 2 boys appear in the 1861 Census living at Richmond place Edinburgh so I have a big gap between William's birth in 1815 and his marriage in 1856.
How long have your cousins lived in NZ. It is a small world indeed. The other side of the world is now as accessible as Edinburgh was in William's.

Im pleased to hear from you and thank you for the update on George's birth. Two Crosshills eh. There is definitely something to be said for a good  knowledge of the area  I had thought about the word "pioneer" also. Generally it means breaking new ground in some field of endeavour. Interesting. Are your family long-lived? The McKnights are my mother's family and her brother(also George McKnight) made it to 100 years. It would be great to trace the family back one more generation. I take it that noone has as yet located a marriage record for George and Margaret.
It does seem Mcknights have lived in the area a long time. I came across a record for a Samuel McKnight born in Ochilltree in 1711 whose father was James McKnight. William McKnight (b1815)moved to Edinburgh and was an innkeeper. He had two sons, George and William, both born in Edinburgh. I have not been able to trace his death record but it was about 1860.It is great to see the input from various family. I see George (b 1813) was a railway sufaceman. I have just finished an old book about that job and the hugely high mortality rate among the workers. Hard times for them and their families.

I live in New Zealand. My descent is through William Mcknight (b1815Stair), son of George McKnight & Margaret Goldie/Goudie. William's eldest son, also named  George McKnight emigrated in 1874 on the Pleiades. He was my gt-grandfather. I visited Ochilltree cemetery in 2007 and was delighted to locate the headstone. I did find George McKnight's death record as 12th June 1840. As William erected the headstone later, after the death of his mother, that probably accounts for the confusion over which year George his father died. I located one birth for a Margaret Goudie of Maybole Ayr (this is close to Crosshill) 22nd Jan 1777, parents James Goudie and Jean Adair. Both these names are used for George and Margaret's offspring so it may be a possibility.Margaret Mcknight appears in the 1841 census under the name Margt(Mrs) MCNIIGHT, Stair Parish, Address Crosshill. Her age is recorded as 60 so a birth record for 1877 is not far out.
