Looking for some help on this one please if anyone can shed light
Francis was from the Shettleston area of Glasgow. There was a story that he was killed in the troop train crash at Quintinshill near Gretna Green on 22 May 1915 but the memorial for this sad disaster does not share his name as a casualty. He has lost his life during WW1 given the family was given the death Penny as a memorial and recognition of his services in War .. I cannot see any detail of this Francis McKenna and wondered if anyone could offer a clue to his fate ?

Have looked at Scotlands People but dont see any alignment to any Francis McKenna in any listing of service deaths ..

Thanking in advance for any help
Scott Morland

Scotland's people record I am disappointed in as it is basic and no alignment to his roots or an address
Scotland's People is a part of the National Records of Scotland (NRS). Its specific remit is the maintenance of birth, marriage and death records of people who were born, married or died in Scotland, or who were living in Scotland on the date of a census.

Military archives are not part of the holdings of the NRS. They are generally held either by the UK National Archives or by individual military units. This is why Scotland's People doesn't have detailed records of soldiers' careers.

It does have records of the deaths of many military personnel with Scottish connections who died outwith Scotland, but it only has the information supplied by the military authorities and forwarded to the NRS by them as it has no other means of formally collecting information about events that did not occur in Scotland. The military authorities, like the General Register Office in England and Wales, do not include in death records the names of the parents of military personnel who died furth of Scotland.

Great supporting piece to clarify for others - Thanks

Thanks Monical, Yes I was meaning to update this thread.. I am recently connected to the family based in Oz ..Adelaide ..
John looks to have been the oldest sibling with 3 sisters and 2 brothers ..
The family in Oz dont seem to have much detail .. but we have teamed up.. It was really nice to share the story with them of my Grandfather and his connection to John .. The letter shared was appreciated..
Great idea on reaching out for any service records .. Hoping to find other family members via the siblings .. would be lovely to find a picture ..

The 55th Infantry Brigade, along with the rest of the 18th Division, was sent to Singapore in 1942 where it surrendered to the Imperial Japanese Army in the short but violent Battle of Singapore. The men of the brigade would spend the next three years as Japanese prisoners in harsh and degrading imprisonment.

Quoted from Wikipedia see link for a better understanding
"The Fall of Singapore, also known as the Battle of Singapore,[c] took place in the South–East Asian theatre of the Pacific War. The Empire of Japan captured the British stronghold of Singapore, with fighting lasting from 8 to 15 February 1942. Singapore was the foremost British military base and economic port in South–East Asia and had been of great importance to British interwar defence strategy. The capture of Singapore resulted in the largest British surrender in its history."

I would be of the opinion that John was caught up in this conflict and became a POW after the 15th Feb 1942.

Given he was being transported in a POW transport ship September 1944 that would see John subjected to abt 2.5 years of captivity under very harsh conditions (Like many others)

Thanks Shaun.. I have added a bit more detail of John Death registration and possible birth record.. Trying to see if there are better archives of his military career and the death registration for service men .. Scotland's people record I am disappointed in as it is basic and no alignment to his roots or an address .... Interested in any historian on Gorbals area, Florence street ... ?? Tonies??

Hi team thanks for the details shared.. and the kind wishes ..
I wonder if there is more detail on John Robertson's military career.
I am disappointed with the death registration of military personnel in Scotland's death records. I attach Johns death registration and it is detailed with no alignment to his roots / address in Scotland..
I wonder if there are any records through military archives that shed some more direct alignment to his roots .. Are there 2nd WW enlistment records to pick up? I also attach after viewing clues what is a fair possible birth registration .. A bit of a clue is the age v the number of John Robertsons and alignment to HutchesonTown / Gorbals area in Glasgow. Johns best friend (My grandfather was 253 Florence Street).. Hanging out at the corner ... ? Tonies?
Would be grateful if there are any military archives that can shed more light and help me confirm correct family alignment of this John Robertson ..

Thanks
