We think the William you are speaking about is William McKnight 1769c md: Agness 1775c Crighton (owners of Crown Hotel) Agnes died 19 Oct 1859, age 84. William died 1 Sept 1831, age 62 (We think he is son of George McKnight & Betty Mitchel).
Then is gets complicated...there are so many McKnight brothers who appear to have married sisters of another family so the same names are carried on down the generations (it gets very confusing).  So far I haven't found a link from my family back to William and Agnes, there could well be one, as a lot of them seem to be involved in the Inn or Spirit business. I knew there were  McKnights in Edinburgh, I have some information on them but didn't know they were also involved in the Inn business..will have to research them a bit more, thanks for that information.

My cousins have been in NZ for over 10 years now.

Unfortunately the male side of my family were not long lived with a lot of them dying before the age of 60, although my father was 75. I know that going back in time, some of them live a very long time which was unusual for that period.
There were McKnights in most of the Inns in New Cumnock, although, as yet, I cannot connection them all together.  I know for sure that Joseph (1810) was Inn Keeper in the Dumfries Arms Inn, New Cumnock.
The earliest McKnights I can find in the Ayrshire area are:
Parents                                           Child           DOB               Where
Allan McKnight+Agnes Hunter           Margaret   06/05/1666     Ayr
George McKnight+Margaret Miller   Margaret   24/03/1666   Ayr
Wiliam McKnight+Agnes McAlesr   William   18/09/1664   Ayr

The spelling of the names may vary but I am sure they are McKnights.

I think a lot of them moved to the cities when farming in the area changed therefore finding work became more complicated.
George McKnight (1813) was killed by an "Express" Train, near Auchinleck, Ayrshire, in 1879.

I certainly think their lives were not easy back then.

Hi Letznz,
Thanks for your response. I am a descendant of John (1804), the son of George and Margaret Goldie.  I have the OPR death records of both George and Margaret.  The problem with Crosshill is that there is two Crosshills, one in Stair where they lived, and a Crosshill near Maybole which is about 19 miles away from Stair.  Have a couple of possibilities for her parents and am checking into those, one was James and Jean Adair.
We think we may have found information on George, think he was born in 17th April 1755 in Ochiltree to John McKnight, unfortunately no mother mentioned on the record.  George is noted as being a "Pioneer" so trying to track something down on that as it may be the reason he married quite late in life.
I have cousins, from the same branch of the family, living in New Zealand.  Its a small world!

Going back to the St. Quivox John, I had typed the year wrong birth year should have read 1855. Have checked my documents and have a death certificate for John McKnight, Died Whitletts Road, which was under St. Quivox at that time,  25th August 1913, parents names: John McKnight and Mary McKnight MS: Brackenridge.
His age on the death certificate is 56 which would make him born 1857C, but I know sometimes the ages are not always so accurate therefore I assumed him to be the 1855 John.
Would appreciate your thoughts, its strange.

Hit Cat 30,
Sorry about John St. Quivox that was a slip.

You can actually Google map and view  Crosshill Cottages, Stair, Ayrshire (it comes under Stair) It was on the Barskimming Estate.  Ochiltree is not so far away. I originally came from that area.

I am currently putting together a list of all the McKnights  born in that area just to see if I can find other connections.

One thing I did come across on Ancestry.com was a descendant of the same branch who seemed to think that George McKnight's parents were John McKnight+Margaret Hair, I have asked how they established that, am waiting on a response, response aside, in the OPR Births I did come across a John McKnight married to Margaret Hair and so far I have come across two births to them:
George      28 September 1777   New Cumnock
Hugh      5 August 1773   New Cumnock

Will let you know if I find out anything more.

One more piece of information:

The fist child of John and Sarah Ann was named John Burnside McKnight....taking the name "Burnside" I found a record of a William McKnight married to a Mary Burnside from the New Cumnock area.
They had three children:
John Burnside McKnight born 19.8.1832 in New Cumnock,
Alexander McKnight born 14.6.1830 in New Cumnock
Andrew born 28.9.1834 in New Cumnock

They could be connected in some way, just not sure.   Will let you know if I find more information.

Found a Marriage certificate of John Harper McKnight, age 27, marrying Sarah Ann McDonald, age 20, in Kilwinning, Ayrshire on the 3rd April 1908. They were living at 9 Long Row, Fergushill, Kilwinning.

His father is noted as John Harper, mother noted as Mary Harper MS: McKnight.  Could be she was married twice or she had John before being married...

Sarah's parents are noted as Stewart McDonald and Mary McDonald MS: Gartley.

Will check into my files to see if I can find more information.

I have a lot of information on the McKnights, New Cumnock, Old Cumnock and Stair, all in Ayrshire, Scotland but don't have anything on Sarah McDonald... so far. Do you have anymore information that could help tracing them?

I am descendant of George McKnight/Margaret Goldie, John McKnight/ Mary Brackenridge

On George McKnight/Susanna Rankin (sometimes Rankine), their children were:
Cunningham born 17.3.1818
William born 1.4.1810
Mary born 25.12.1803
Jean born 8.5.1816
Ketty born 12.2.1806
Mary born 19.10.1806
John born 30.11.1813
Betty born 23.5.1800
James born 23.12.1812
George born 16.3.1806
All born in New Cumnock, Ayrshire.

On George McKnight and Margaret Goldie.  I found an OPR death record for George McKnight (no age given) but his occupation is noted as Pioneer.  Died
12th June 1840, Crofshill, Stair.  Also have OPR record for the death of Margaret McKnight, 13th Nov 1850, where it states she is the Widow of George McKnight, pioneer.  Both died at Crofshill, Stair, Ayrshire.  So assume this to be George and Margaret Goldie?

George and Margaret Goldie as far as I can find had 8 Children:
John McKnight Born 30.9.1804 Crofshill, Stair. Died 15 May 1857, Riccarton, Kilmarnock,
Joseph McKnight  Born Abt. 1810 Old Cumnock, died 28 Aug 1867, Port Dundas.
Margaret Born 5.12.1822, Stair
William Born 10.12.1815, Stair
Agnes Born 27.6.1802, Ochiltree, died 6.7.1870 Edinburgh
James Born 10.8.1800 , Ochiltree, died 3.10.1869 Edinburgh
Hugh Rorison Born 30.9.1818, Stair. died 31.1.1906 Edinburgh.
George B 14.2.1813, Stair.

John and Mary Brackenridge as far as I can find, had 8 children:

John born 4.4.1885 Riccarton, died 25.8.1913, St.Quivox, Ayr
Margaret born 2.6.1839, Stair, died 18.7.1899, Kirkgatehead, Irvine
George born 3.4.1843 Old Cumnock
John born 14.3.1847, Old Cumnock
James born 1.4.1849, Old Cumnock
Joseph born 13.6.1851, Old Cumnock, died 12.3.1873 Riccarton, Kilmarnock
Jean born 9.4.1841, Old Cumnock
Wiliam born 17.4.1853, Riccarton, Kilmarnock.

Hope this can help.  I am just having difficulty finding the parents and siblings of of George McKnight and Margaret Goldie.
