Lincolnshire / Re: appleyard and Lincolnshire

Thanks for the information people have posted and I think it is possible that William was married to Elizabeth and then Rebecca so it may be that it was Elizabeth who was from Laceby and that was the reason for settling there. Frances and William are two of William and Rebecca's children and I am reasonably confident about that but I am reassured that it is not just me who doubts some online trees.  I have never tried googling the names so I will try that.  Still unsure why he would have been travelling from Luddendon Foot in first place to meet either Elizabeth or Rebecca.  I will have a look at the Mary Pattinson although I am not sure I want any more complications!

Lincolnshire / appleyard and Lincolnshire
« on: Monday 27 July 15 20:14 BST (UK)  »
I have the baptism information on the children of William Appleyard and Rebecca for the village of Laceby in Lincolnshire.  The children were Mary, Rebecca, Frances, William, Jane and Thomas and the baptisms were between 1726 and 1738.  I cannot find a marriage for William and Rebecca so I do not know her surname or a baptism for a Rebecca in Laceby.  The only baptism I can find for a William Appleyard is in 1703 in Luddendon Foot which is near Calderdale in Yorkshire.  This seems a long way from Laceby and could anyone suggest a good reason for travelling from one to the other or has anyone found any other William Appleyard married to a Rebecca for the right time?  There are several family trees on ancestory giving Luddendon Foot as the birth place for William Appleyard but I am never clear what evidence people have or if this is just what comes up on the ancestory search engine which is not exactly definitive.
Any help appreciated

Alderney, Guernsey, Jersey, Sark / Re: Samuel Deed

Hi
I had been assuming that Susan and Sarah were the same person but if George and Sarah Deed were god parents at the baptism of George and Susan Deed's son, Samuel then there must be two couples with surname Deed which seems a coincidence.  George Deed married Sarah Randal in 1796 in High Wickham but his home village is Whepstead in Suffolk and he returns there in 1814 and he has two more children George and Sarah.  The 1841 census for Whepstead shows Mary Sparks nee Deed born @ 1807 who has a brother called  John Deed and both say they were born in the Channel islands as does Samuel Deed also living in Whepstead hence my assumption that they were all George and Sarah's children.  There was no further mention of Richard Deed so I had assumed he had died.  Mary Sparks was present at George deed's death in 1852 and in 1841 he is living in Colchester with a 10year old boy called George Sparks who is then with his mother Mary in 1851 so it seems pretty certain that she is George's daughter.
I think I need to find more information about George and Susan Deed.

Thanks for your help

Hi Stewart

I looked at the Jersey site as you helpfully suggested and found Richard and Samuel Deed which were indeed my ancestors. I could not find any more Deeds and I wondered if you knew if all the baptism records for 1800 to 1820 are on the site?  From the census records for the home village in Suffolk a Mary Deed born around 1807 and John Deed born in 1814 say they were originally from the Channel Islands.  I am almost certain these are siblings of Samuel and Richard and all are children of George but I cannot locate any birth records.  George seems to have been stationed in jersey during this period but he may have also spent time elsewhere I guess.

Thanks

Alderney, Guernsey, Jersey, Sark / Samuel Deed

I think my ancestor George Deed was stationed in Jersey whilst serving in the Royal artillery  at some time between 1800 and 1814. I think he may have had a son around 1810 Samuel and possibly other children.  Does anyone know where records of the births of children in the Channel Islands at this time are available?   I can find Samuel Deed in the 1841 to 1881 censuses in Whepstead Suffolk and it says he was born in the Channel Islands and as  George was from Whepstead and returned there after the army I thought it likely that Samuel was one of his sons but I don't know for sure.

Armed Forces / Deed Chelsea Pensioner
« on: Tuesday 13 May 14 22:37 BST (UK)  »
One of my families ancestors enlisted in the 35th foot in July 1799 and then enlisted in the Royal artillery in October 1799 and was in the 6th battalion.  He was discharged from the army "in consequence of a reduction and admitted to the pension list" on 7th September 1814.

I have his discharge papers from the archive - would anyone know what the 6th battalion would have been doing (I'm assuming fighting napoleon in the peninsular) or how I could find out about the movements of the battalion or if I am likely to find any more about George Deed's army career.  What was the reduction in the army - was this simply that they thought we had defeated Napoleon?

thanks

Family History Beginners Board / Hospital births Scotland
« on: Monday 07 April 14 15:09 BST (UK)  »
I have been researching my Scottish family and my father and his 3 siblings (Keenan) were all born in hospital in Dundee between 1916 and 1927.  Also I know that my paternal grandmother and her sister were born in the Glasgow royal infirmary in 1890's (Mullan) whereas I have not come across any of my English family being born in hospital until the 1950's.  Were hospital births more common in Scotland at an earlier date? My dad's family were poor and I wondered if this is likely to be the reason?

Northamptonshire / county lunatic asylum
« on: Friday 07 March 14 20:27 GMT (UK)  »
The medical record for a great aunt in Leicester suggested that her maternal grandmother Rebecca Butler nee Bradshaw had spent time in lunatic asylum.  Rebecca lived in Cottingham Northamptonshire and she died in 1855.  Does anyone know which lunatic asylum she was likely to be a patient in?  It would have been in the 1840's or 1850's I think.

Hi Gortonboy
Thanks for this information.  I have not been able to find Francis in the 1911 census so could you give me more details.
Thanks
