Thank you Victor for finding Mary's surname for me.  So were either of them christened at the church I wonder so that I could get their parents names?

A few years ago my husband and I stopped at Painswick on our way down south to have a look at the church, it's beautiful inside and I took photos of it and the font thinking maybe my forebears were dipped.  Also the clock outside is interesting.  I persuaded my husband to trawl through the graveyard with me for any Gardners and there were a few but I don't know if they were mine.  I'd like to get William and Mary's death dates now.

I'd read about the yew trees and the unusual types of gravestones, very interesting they are.
Thank you once again.

Thank you Victor for your look-up, but that entry isn't my William as my 3xgrt grandfather John was christened 1770 and he I think was the 4th or 5th child of William and Mary.

I think GARDNER is a fairly common surname in Gloucestershire.
Thanks for your trouble though.

I wonder if anyone has any information about this family of butchers, possibly established in Grantham in the 1870s.

Many thanks

I wondered if anyone had access to look-up the parish registers of Painswick parish church for my 4xgt grandfather William GARDNER born possibly 1737 at Painswick, married to a Mary.  I should think they both probably died in Painswick too.

Many thanks for any help.

Hello Louise
I too am related to a shoemaker SMITH of Tranent and feel equally as frustrated as you !

My 3 x grt grandfather is the Adam SMITH you mentioned, married to Margaret SMITH in 1813.  I have no more information on them other than their 9 children so far discovered are:-
John 1814, my William 1816, Mary 1818, Anstruther 1820, Janet Sharpe (who you mention) 1821, Margaret 1823, Ann Dewar 1825, Adam 1828, and twins Walter Campbell and Charles 1831.

I have Margaret as widowed in 1841 living in New Row, Tranent which to me means that husband Adam probably died between 1831 (date of last born) and 1841 but I can't find it. Then Margaret is still living at the same address until 1861 (I can't find the family on the 1871) then Anstruther (another shoemaker)  is on his own in 1881 still on New Row.

This Janet Sharpe is later than the one you have with your James.  My William (1816) I think must have died between 1881 and 1891.

Any info on my Adam would be gratefully received or any of the others.  Who knows we may eventually link up.
Cheers,  Poppy10

After climbing up the wrong tree for the parents of my gt gt grandfather William SMITH, I have now got his parents as Adam SMITH and Margaret SMITH thanks to the help of Archie (Templar75).  I think they had ten children christened in Tranent namely:
John  abt 1814; my William 1816; Mary 1818; Anstruther 1820; Janet Sharpe 1821; Margaret 1823; Ann Dewar 1825; Adam 1828; Walter Campbell and Charles both 1831.

On the 1841 census for Tranent wife Margaret was down as a widow so Adam must have died between 1831 the date of the last born and 1841 but I can't find the date of death or birth of either him or wife Margaret, and I have searched several record sites.  I must say that I can't get on with the new Familysearch site.

I should think that they both died in Tranent so are they in the Tranent churchyard or can anyone look at the parish register please.

Hello Tidybooks (Tom)

Thank you for your look-up on the John Gray Centre site regarding my Isabella SMITH nee GAVINE's death.  I want to purchase a photocopy of the page you found so I think I will have to ring the Local History department to see how to go about the remit.  I still haven't found the date of death of her husband William between 1881 and 1891 censuses, but when I do I will hopefully also get his announcement.  What a great source the Centre must be.
Thank you once again.

Yes, I can see what you are thinking now, and you must be right.

I wonder if husband William caught the tb from her, though he was on the 1871 census.
Isabella's daughter, another Isabella (my gt grandmother down in Lee, Kent) she also died of tb and her husband caught it and died shortly afterwards.  Then their second daughter also died with it, it's quite prevalent this maternal side of the family.

Thanks once again Archie
