Hi,
I am a relative of the Kerry's from Smalley. I believe the origin of your family legend regarding the "officer from Wales" to be factual.
My research into the Kerry family has lead me to who I believe is the first Kerry in Smalley - a Thomas Kerry (born in 1580). Thomas was married to an Emma Willimott (born in 1585). It appears that Thomas originates from..........Wales!!!!
Thomas's son John (born in 1612) married a Jane Old (born in 1611).
