Thank you all the people who replied. I must remember 1939 'register' and not 'census' 1939. It does actually say 'register' on Findmypast - must pay attention.

Can someone help me. I am looking at the 1939 census, a portion of which appears below.

Joan Bennett (Bradley) 1928. 49 Woodfield Avenue, Flint Flint M.B.Flintshire Wales
Joan Bennett (Davies) 1930 10 Luton Terrace, Llanelli Llanelly M.B. Carmarthenshire Wales
Joan Bennett (Mendelsweig) 1917 Church Walks, Orms Key, Llandudno Llandudno U. Wales

You will notice that the index name is Bennett but other names appear in brackets. What are these names and how do the names relate to the person?

Hello MarMnkly

Looking back is no problem. What I am tracing is the family when they were in Bargoed. As you can see from there were two children in the 1911 census and I know there were others, my mother for one. I would like to trace the others. Thanks for the interest.

Thanks for your interest Rowley. My grandfather was born in Chester in 1885 and went to Bargoed to join the workforce in the mines. He married Sarah Ann Roberts in Chester before he moved to Bargoed. When he lived at 16 Henry Street he had two children, David John Davies (b.1910) and Gwladys Davies (b.1911). My mother May Davies was born in 1913. They had,by this time, moved to 69 West Street. Tracing the rest of the family is not easy through BMD records since the name is 'Davies' as you can imagine, there are plenty of them in Wales! The parish records could probably track down the 'right' Davies through the maiden name/address combination.

                                                                                    Regards   Julius

My grandfather,Joseph Davies, lived in Bargoed. He was a miner and lived for a brief period in Henry Street and later in West Street. The houses in the town looked as if they were built at the same time, probably to house the workers in the mines which were opened in the early 20th century.
Can anyone answer the following questions.

                                                               When were the houses built?
Does anybody know where I can find a source of parish                                   records? Preferably online.

My father Henry Prodger lived in Kensington, i guess, from the 1980s to the 1990s. On his death certificate it says that he was a restaurateur. He lived in Crompton Court, Brompton Road, Kensington. He  died in 1999. Since he might have 'owned' a restaurant,he might be in some sort of directory. Could anyone tell where the starting point might be in this case?

Thanks a lot everyone for all the useful information. If it is true that John O'Rourke was in the S.Africa
police it would explain why he does not appear in the census figures of 1911, or at least I can't track him down.

My great uncle served with the 13th Hussars in South Africa. He was 'discharged on attaining rank of Sgt. Major of Police' in 20.9.1901. His name was John O'Rourke 3521. I have two questions.

What exactly is meant by Sgt Major of Police? Are we talking about the civil police or the police in the army. If the latter, why would he be discharged?

He lived in Bristol yet he signed-on in Dundalk. Why would he have travelled to Dundalk to sign-on?
