I was wondering does England have a similar system to Groni / Scotland's People for looking at certificates with credits?, the GRO website I've seen looks like it is a minimum of £7 just to get at one certificate !

With regard to these Catholic Registers am I right in thinking that these cannot be searched by name?, and that you have to just scroll through the microfiche pages that are there?

The county of Monaghan is split into a bunch of areas (please excuse my ignorance of the correct terminology) and that although my relative was residing in Tydavnet when he got married it could be that 42 years earlier when he was born he could be in another area and it's just a case of trawling through these registers? Or is there a better way of finding information?

Also what's your take on how the baptism date relates to the date of birth ?

I think I can see the Mohan in that link though I'm not too good at reading it, can you help me understand it?

The far left is the date (10th of something?)

The person being baptised is in the left column?, is that a town name underneath their name?

The middle column is the parents names?, though I don't think it looks like Edward & Catherine I don't know what those names are?

The right hand column is ?

Thanks for all your help.

Hi Maggsie,

That is very kind of you as I'm a bit lost with it.

I'm sure he would undoubtedly be Catholic.

His name is Edward Mohan / Moan and what I have is that he was married to Catherine McAree in Urbleshanny, Scotstown, Monaghan in 1889 when he was aged 42, so his birth date would be around 1847.

His residence on the wedding certificate is given as Tydavnet, Monaghan.

At some point they moved to Glasgow, Scotland where he died in 1912.

Monaghan / 1847 Birth Date

Hi,

I have an ancestor who seems to have been born in Monaghan in 1847, is there any way you can look up / see a birth record from that date?

Many thanks KG for taking the time and posting that link that spells out how the records work, no wonder I couldn't find it there :-)

Groni looks similar to Scotland's People with the credits system, I shall register and buy some credits and have a rumble around, once again much obliged.

Thank you for your replies, the 1927 one looks unlikely as the age is a good 10 years out but the 1923 and 1929 ones are promising.

To my embarrassment I had no idea what Groni was, I was using the Irish Genealogy site, have you any idea why those ones you've found don't show up there?

Armagh / Bridget Connolly Death
« on: Tuesday 01 October 19 16:35 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am trying to find out what became of Bridget Connolly of Keady, Armagh.

She was born in Clea, Keady as Bridget Rafferty on 30/3/1865, married Michael Connolly in Keady on 3/2/1889, was widowed when Michael died in Blackwatertown on 19/5/1913.

She also shows up in the 1911 census as staying at House 21 in Clay (Clea?), Keady with her family but I can't seem to find any record of her death.

Can anyone help?

Lanarkshire / Re: Italian Immigration To Glasgow
« on: Tuesday 31 January 12 12:43 GMT (UK)  »
Just to clarify, I know he was born in Vallerotonda in 1885 and that he came to the UK on his own, his parents never left Italy.

He somehow ended up in Glasgow and married a Scottish woman in 1914 from which my own family began.

What I don't know is when he arrived in the UK and what port of entry he came in, I guess I'm thinking along the lines of immigration records or something?

Scotlands People does not have him in the 1911 census so I'm guessing he probably arrived some time between the 1911 census and him showing up on the marriage record in 1914?

Is there some way of checking when people arrived in the country?
