In my family tree, there's an example of a middle name becoming linked to the surname in one generation, thereby creating an unusual and completely unique surname. Does that happen often?

My late Aunt was a Bannister from Burnley. I was told many years ago that she was a cousin of Roger Bannister, but from the research that I've done so far, it seems that she must have been a distant cousin. I've come a bit stuck, and I see you mentioned that you've done a Bannister family tree. Can you help at all?
