Can help you with George.  James Younie and Anne Clarke were from Overton Farm which is part of East Elchies or to the point where McCallum Scotch is now located.  James is the brother to my husband's 5 gggrandfather John Younie who married Janet Chalmers.  Their father was George Inie of Rothes(Dundurcas parish).  George was an elder in the church.
Children of James and Anne Younie
Elizabeth B. 1768, Wester Elchies(Tomlea)
George B. 1771 ( Tomlea), D. 1840 m. Anne Brander
Margaret B. 1773, Tomlea m. James Farquharson
Helen B. 1776 Tomlea m John Douglas
Grizel B. 1780
Hope this is helpful.  I have most of the early history for this family.

I too have an interest in the High Street, I have a Mary Henderson born at no. 37 in 1880, is it still there?
" Courant Court: High Street, North side, No. 37, Site of the Elgin Courant Newspaper Offices and Printing Presses and home to 4 families in 1851, and 7 families by 1901.  In 2002 it is a gated close with a square pend, the houses bieing 3 storey at the pend and becoming 2 storey further down the close.  There is evidence of bricked up doors and windows on the right hand side, including one large bricked-up access area witha hoist in the roof above which was probably connected with the old Elgin Courant Newspaper Printworks"
From The Lands and People of Moray , The Closes of Elgin by Bruce Bishop.  Published in 2002 by J & B Bishop, Rivendell, Miltonduff, Elgin, Moray
Hope this is helpful.  This little book is available from the North East Family History Society in Aberdeen, Scotland

Just found your query about 185 High Street in Elgin.  I can tell you that at one time it was called City Arms Close and was located on the North side of High Street. I quote from a book by Bruce Bishop , The Closes of Elgin.  "No's 185,187 , Orginally two separate closes, redeveloped in the 19th century, comprising mainly 19th century terraced houses some with of which have outside end stairs.  7 families listed on the 1881 census.  Evidence of an arched pend at No.185."
I was interested in locating No. 156 High Street where the Younie family had an Inn in the 1800's.  This little book has provided a lot of information about the Closes' and the people who lived in Elgin.  It is available from the NE Family History Society in  Aberdeen.

Would very much like a picture of the Rafford cemetery.  Thank you for the offer.

Julia,
I think I have some information about Janet Younie and Silverwright.  I need to get into my paper files.  Seem like someone sent me some information about this union at one time and since it wasn't our family line, I filed it.  Will get back to you after I have had a chance to locate the information.

HI Julia,
Your Janet b. 1781 is the daughter of John b. 1748 ( most likely in Dundurcas Parish) and Janet Chalmers of Rothes, Morayshire.  John is the son of George Inie of Rothes, who farmed at Overton Farm which is part of Easter Elchies now connected to McCallum Distillery, Morayshire.  This Janet Younie married  John Black and had six children.
My husband, Guy is a direct descendant from John who was his 5 gg grandfather.  I have a great deal of information regarding this family and their immigration to Canada and the US.
Would be happy to share information with you.

Do you have any ties with the Younie family from Rafford in Moray? Particularly a John Younie born 1818 who married Ellen Mavor and came to Canada in 1858?

jeff
I was wondering if you have any connection with John Younie married Janet Chalmers in 1774 Knockando, Moray. I am descended from their eldest daughter Janet Younie who married John Black. I would love to fill in more information on this family. ::)
