This was the birth of Archibald Cain's unnamed child. I don't have the copy of Archibald's death - It was a few years ago and I think I was so disappointed that I just deleted it, so I might just get another copy as  Forfarian suggested.

That birth was certainly very interesting to me Annie, as the child was the seventh child of my great-great-great grandparents, Archibald Cain/Kane/Kean and Isabella Lockhart. Sadly the unnamed girl died two days afterwards but from that I found confirmation of the number of children to look for. The certificate says that they were married in Glasgow in 1835 but I haven't found that in official records as yet.
I believe that Archibald died in 1860 but unfortunately the death cert is so faded that I can't make anything of it at all.

Inverness / Re: 1851/61/71 Inverness census lool up please

"Na Buirgh" really translates as "The Borves" or "The Burghs, " but Borve (Scottish Gaelic: Na Buirgh) is a village in Harris in the Outer Hebrides, ( Scotland.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borve,_Harris ) so sometimes the translation is not quite literal. I'm not sure about details of Harris geography but there is a Borgh Bheag (Little Borve) and Borgh Mor (Great Borve) there, which I presume are the different parts of the village, which is just north of  Scarista.

Great photos of your trip to Island Flodda. Have you thought of joining Benbecula History Society on Facebook. "Community information group for Benbecula and Uist in the Outer Hebrides. Historical data from Clanranald, Gordon Cathcart, emigration, genealogy records and RAF and military presence. A local archive collected by volunteers over a 25 year period." https://www.facebook.com/pages/Benbecula-History-Society/189975034489335

Occupation Interests / Re: What on earth is a Calendar Worker? COMPLETED THANKS
« on: Thursday 05 April 12 22:58 BST (UK)  »
My wife's great grandfather was a Calender Worker in Kirriemuir, Angus. I assumed it was something to do with the jute/linen industry and by the sound of the answers above ,  I guess I wasn't far off the mark. Thanks for all these interesting links. javascript:replaceText(' ;)', document.postmodify.message);

It is quite interesting that the 1861 Census shows Neil as a "Miner of Nicol" but ten years later that he was a "Labourer in Powderworks" (presumably at the  Lochfyne Powder Works) and then in 1881 a "Powder Maker" and then in 1891 "masons labourer employed".

Looks as though the 17 year old Catherine McArthur who was a servant in his house in 1851 was the same lady that Neil married sometime in 1860. Niel McGugan birth:   21 Apr 1817 christening:   27 Apr 1817 Parents Duncan McGugan, Cathrine McNiccol ..

Parents marriage date:   29 May 1810
groom's name:   Duncan Macgugan
bride's name:   Catharine Macnicol
Other children Mary Mcgugan christening:   30 Apr 1811
Alexander Mcgugan 11 Feb 1813
John McGugan birth:   03 Oct 1819 christening: 08 Oct 1819. Not sure why the family took a trip up to Uist c 1860 :)
