Europe / Re: Seeking a 19th Century French Connection.

Hi Jorose and Oakheart,

Thank you very much indeed for letting me know how to proceed and for including such a wealth of information already!  I shall get to work and go through all the references which you have mentioned.  I will post a further reply once I've done that.  I've always felt that in a country like France it should be possible to get back to earlier generations.

With many thanks and best wishes,

Greenbank.

Europe / Seeking a 19th Century French Connection.
« on: Thursday 13 February 14 13:33 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to research my wife's French ancestors who include Valentin Eugene Massot born on 1st December 1872 in St. Martin de Connee in the Canton of Bais in the Departement of Mayenne.  After military service with the French Army he came to England where he married and raised a large family. I have his full family records in England and also found his birth certificate and military record in the Departement of Mayenne records.  The birth certificate records his father as also Valentin Massot, a moulder age 28 (giving a birth year of 1844) who later lived in Port Brillet in the Canton of Lorion, also in Mayenne.  His mother was Marie Vazeux age 26 (giving a birth year of 1846).  I have been unable to find details of the parents' births, marriage or deaths or of any other children on searching on Geneanet or Ancestry.  Any help or advice would be much appreciated as I seem to have hit a 'brick wall'.    'Greenbank'

Midlothian / Re: Seeking my grandfather, John Antonio Favard

Hi Monica, Gali and Doddie

Thank you all very much for your interest and the wealth of information supplied.  I shall consult all the references you have quoted and put together the details.  If Annet Antonio Favard was my grandfather there is the coincidence that he was born in Southwark where I now live!  I'll post my conclusions when I've got my head round it all!

Hi Agnes14

Thank you very much for the information which, as you say, takes me back a further two generations.
I shall press ahead via Scotland's People and census records as well as checking through the other Roots Chat posts in detail to see if there are any links.  Best wishes,  Greenbank

Ayrshire / Re: Roxburgh

I am researching my Roxburgh family history in Scotland and have got back to James Roxburgh born on 29/3/1839 in Kilmaurs Ayrshire.  He was a quarrymaster and died in Edinburgh on 29/1/1929.  He was married to Janet Barr Wilson.

I realise Roxburgh is a very common name but wonder if there is any connection.

Midlothian / Seeking my grandfather, John Antonio Favard
« on: Sunday 29 January 12 17:05 GMT (UK)  »
I have been trying without success to trace my maternal grandfather called John or Antonio Favard who I believe lived in Joppa, Midlothian around 1895.  I understand he was married with two daughters and subsequently divorced. He fathered a child, Janet Favard Roxburgh (d.o.b 10 April 1895), my mother, by Agnes McKay Roxburgh (1871-1901) although he never married Agnes.  Subsequently Agnes Roxburgh married a William Templeton by whom she had a son who died age 6 weeks.

I have been told that John or Antonio's mother was Spanish.  On my mother's death certicificate Antonio's occupation was given as 'clerk'.  Any information would be much appreciated.
