Durham / Re: Sea captain John Andersson from Sweden.
« on: Saturday 06 February 16 02:13 GMT (UK)  »
The John (Johan) Andersson you are looking for could be a John Anderson who is in the 1861 Census of England. He is living in the village of Norton in County Durham which is just North West of Middlesborough. He is described as John Anderson, occupation Seaman , born in Sweden, age 31 (so his date of birth would be 1830.)
He is married to a woman named Susanna Atkinson and they appear to be living with her parents William and Susanna Atkinson . John and Susanna have a 1 year old child named William.  Susanna Atkinson married John Anderson in 1858.
In the 1871 Census Susanna is married to John Mason, son William Anderson is with his mother and stepfather. Susanna married John Mason in 1865 so it is likely that John Anderson died sometime between 1861 and 1865. There is a death record for a John Anderson in Stockton in 1862, Stockton is just west of Middlesborough and I believe is the registration area for the village of Norton.
This may not be your John but at least worth eliminating or investigating further.
Hope this is a start for you

I believe you can find transcripts for both these marriages at Durham Records Online, not sure how much info they would provide. £1.50 to take a look.

Durham Records Online show that they have info on a marriage bond in 1782 for Ralph Trafford b. 1758/59 in Warkworth. It costs £3 to download the info. Alternatively that info may be available in the Durham Diocese Marriage Bonds and Allegations 1692 - 1900 images collection on the Family Search website, the images aren't indexed so you would have to go to 1782 and look at each record, there a just under a thousand pages !

Northumberland / Re: Alexander Williams b1869 - Can you help?
« on: Thursday 15 November 12 00:45 GMT (UK)  »
Hi littleliz02   I am not sure about the dates you gave on your post, but I se that there is an Alexander Williams from Banff In the 1901 married to Elizabeth living in South Shields with son Alexander transcribed as Alexandra, his dob would be about 1872  (Transcribed as Alexandre Williams of Baff ). There is also an Alexander Williams in 1911 in South Shields,  who is from Banff (Transcribed as Barff ) dob 1869 , single living as a lodger. No sign of Elizabeth or Alexandra. I assume they must be the same person, is this your Alexander ?

There is a small community south of Bamburgh called Burton which consists as far as I can tell of West Burton and East Burton but unfortunately no South_Burton, the Keys to the Past website indicates there is an abandoned village site near Burton that was a going concern up till the early 19th C......other than that ....?????

Many thanks Sharon for the baptismal reference
and Diddy for the Geo references, unfortunately the only info I have, is gleaned from the census returns, I have no info on any possible marriages .
I will be passing through Hexham at the end of Feb maybe I could do some groundwork and doorknocking !
Many thanks

Hi Steve,
There is a book available online through the open library project called  " Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae" which is a history of the ministers of the Church of Scotland , it has some  information on the Church of Scotland south of the border.
In Newcastle , Scottish residents of the Sandgate area held their first congregation at "Sommervilles Entry" in 1732, the church moved to Wall Knoll in 1764,  Argyll Street in 1842, the Geographicall Hall at Barras Bridge in 1892 and Benton Terrace Sandyford Road in 1905.

   all the best
