Yes that's the one.
Mary Taylor's son George migrated to Australia with his wife Ann(e) Ashman in 1857. They named their farm in western Victoria 'Gwehelog'.
They were strict weslyan methodists here in Australia which you imagine wouldn't sit too well with coming from an inn.
I am really keen to know more about Wellington Inn at Gwehelog.

Thank you for the link to Ann Matthewman's birth details. This is James and Mary's daughter - on the right track right family.
Ann was their sixth child - the others were all born in Wakefield, Yorkshire.
In 1848, Mary gave birth to another daughter in Wakefield. She died the same year - I presume either during childbirth or as a result of complications.
I will follow up the leads of brother's name and occupation.

Thank you for this info. I visited Gwehelog last year and the locals couldn't recall another hotel either. We visited the Hall Inn - wouldn't it be great if this was the one I am looking for.
After the death of her husband (John Taylor) in 1839 Mary Taylor remarried. I think she married William Watkins, possibly a labourer from Gwehelog on June 3, 1940.
Mary Taylor's father was John Hatch - both Mary and her father give their occupation as publican.
Any further information about the inn or the Hatch, Taylor or Watkins family warmly welcomed.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Matthewman - James Alexander - Wakefield

James Alexander Matthewman and his second wife Eliza (nee Tunnacliff)  and his children migrated to Australia circa 1850.
I believe he was born in 1812
James married Mary Bailiff in Wakefield in 1838. She died 1848.
James married Eliza Tunnacliff in 1849 in Wakefield.
The family lived in Fitzroy in Melbourne, Victoria.
Does anyone have any information about his parents or his life in Australia?

Does anyone have any information about the Wellington Inn in the hamlet of Gwehelog near Usk in Wales. My ancestors - the Taylors  apparently were living there in June 1840.

Thank you everyone for all the information. Until a few months ago I had no idea I had any Sutherland blood flowing in my veins.
My lineage is Isaac and Margaret Sutherland - son Robert and Agnes (nee )Cashley - daughter Ethel Amy and Herbert Stranger - daughter (Helen) Alma and (John) Roy Shepherd - daughter Margaret and John Taylor.
I am reading all your messages with interest.

Thanks for this information - it has been very helpful. It will let me 'flesh out' the info I have. Particularly happy to now have a photo of Isaac.
I know Isaac was listed as a farmer in the Directory of Victoria (Baillieres) 1869 list. Do you know where his farm was?

I am a descendent of Isaac Sutherland who immigrated to Australia with his family on the Black Eagle in 1854. I am a descendent of his son Robert and Agnes (nee Cashley). I understand there may be some photos of Isaac around. I am confused by suggestions Isaac may have built the Somerset Hotel in Bannockburn Victoria. I understand it was first licenced in 1854. If Isaac and family arrived in Melbourne in October it doesn't give him a lot of time to be involved in the build. Also interested in suggestion he may have been a minister -is there any evidence of this?
