Technical Help / Re: Using WhatsApp for meetings
« on: Tuesday 27 January 26 11:24 GMT (UK) »
Zoom has a wide variety of tools that can be useful. They can be restricted to the meeting host. Screen share, meeting recording, reactions, ability to annotate the screen, whiteboard, even capturing notes from the conversation. It also gives the host the ability to kick people out of the meeting and report them! Chat within a meeting is automatically downloaded to the host and can be edited and circulated. You can alter the background to your video feed to give privacy. It's easy to split the meeting into different 'rooms' and then bring everyone back.
I'm amazed at what's possible!

Zoom works just fine on mobiles. I use it every week with no trouble (have interviewed someone who was in the back of a taxi in an Amsterdam traffic jam)! Family Zoom calls are mainly by mobile. Don't even need the app, it works fine in a browser.

Armed Forces / Re: English Civil War battlefield dead

Thank you - that looks like being fascinating. "The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there."
I've been reading up on the battle as well - some recent research has been done but as yet no significant archaeology.

Armed Forces / English Civil War battlefield dead
« on: Sunday 11 January 26 22:03 GMT (UK) »
Family stories have it that my multi-great grandfather was killed at the Battle of Chalgrove Field in the Civil War. I'm well aware that until the First World War battle dead weren't as carefully treated as they are now. I want to know what was done with the bodies from this (and other) battles; in my ancestor's case the battle was 25 miles or so from home so it would be unlikely that the family would get the news and then be able to retrieve the body - what might have happened?
Meanwhile I'm reading more about the battle, unusual as a cavalry encounter.

For countries outside the UK - British Empire - USA, Cyndi's List can be helpful in pointing out resources that are unsuspected. I've had a brief look and for once I think I've drawn blank - but might be worth a look:

The Lighter Side / Re: Balancing A Family Tree
« on: Saturday 03 January 26 22:43 GMT (UK) »
Just one of the areas of conflict that has affected my family is the English Civil War. Families fought among themselves and the damage caused in all sorts of ways was enormous. (One source suggests that the death toll as a proportion of the population was double that of World War I). Family legend (perhaps) has it that my 9-greats grandfather was killed in battle for the Royalists; yet his children and grandchildren seem to have done pretty well under the Commonwealth. Unfortunately there aren't many reliable records of individuals and my understanding is patchy. I've been reading accounts of the war and am gradually becoming better informed in general terms, if not on family detail; allegedly the family Bible was destroyed by 2-greats grandmother.

Some guidance....
It all depends (of course) or how long he remained serving - and if he got promotion to Lieutenant from Midshipman.
