Other Countries / Re: ARGENTINA : looking for Walter Oldfield LOWE in Rosario

For countries outside the UK - British Empire - USA, Cyndi's List can be helpful in pointing out resources that are unsuspected. I've had a brief look and for once I think I've drawn blank - but might be worth a look:

The Lighter Side / Re: Balancing A Family Tree
« on: Saturday 03 January 26 22:43 GMT (UK)  »
Just one of the areas of conflict that has affected my family is the English Civil War. Families fought among themselves and the damage caused in all sorts of ways was enormous. (One source suggests that the death toll as a proportion of the population was double that of World War I). Family legend (perhaps) has it that my 9-greats grandfather was killed in battle for the Royalists; yet his children and grandchildren seem to have done pretty well under the Commonwealth. Unfortunately there aren't many reliable records of individuals and my understanding is patchy. I've been reading accounts of the war and am gradually becoming better informed in general terms, if not on family detail; allegedly the family Bible was destroyed by 2-greats grandmother.

Some guidance....
It all depends (of course) or how long he remained serving - and if he got promotion to Lieutenant from Midshipman.

Graveyards and Gravestones / Re: Deceased Online Burial Information Help
« on: Saturday 13 December 25 21:48 GMT (UK)  »
Do you have the names of the other occupants.  If so you can presumably tell if they are related or not.  Was your burial the earliest one in the time frame?

Some plots were bought for 'life' although actually there was a limitation on the number of years of exclusivity so it might simply be that the plot was not exclusive to anyone but the fact that there were 18 people in there in total leads one to assume it was a common grave.

Pheno

Here are the details for churchyards in our diocese at the moment:
The maximum period of reservation permitted by law is 100 years but it is the Chancellor`s usual policy to reserve for a much shorter period, generally 50 years, although this may be extended in appropriate circumstances if, by its expiry, the right has not been exercised.

The Common Room / Re: Marriage at 17?

No, the parents consent is not published. The whole point of the calling of Banns the parents or anyone else to raise an objection.

Although it isn't required to be recorded, some vicars helpfully state that consent was given by the bride or groom's father or mother and name them. Sometimes if consent is given by the mother, it might be recorded that the father has died. I've only seen this on pre 1837 records, some of the pre-printed marriage record forms had a "with consent of" section.

We also see in Bishop of London's marruage licences from time to time "by consent of friends" which suggests being away from their original parish, and also "by consent of guardian" when both parents have died; the guardian usually named, the friends not named.

Cumberland / Re: Drigg and Irton Cumberland parish registers
« on: Saturday 29 November 25 21:33 GMT (UK)  »
OGIndex suggests that very little of the registers of either parish have appeared online.
In microfilm at Cumbria Archives Drigg has apparently continuous registers from 1631; Irton from 1697, although baptisms seem to be absent after 1866. The staff in Carlisle are endlessly helpful and will issue an archives card on arrival if you need one.
