World War One / John R Battersby, East African Mounted Rifles
« on: Tuesday 05 June 18 15:01 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone,
This is my first post on this board, though I have posted on the Ireland Board before.

While researching a WW1 soldier, Lt. Augustus Battersby, Connaught Rangers, who died of dysentery in 1915 in the Cameroons, I came across a reference to his brother John Radcliffe Battersby, serving in the East African Rifles.

Out of curiosity I had a look at what I think is John's Medal Roll Card. This shows he served in 2 Regiments - the East African M. Rifles & East African V.L. Firstly, can anyone confirm the correct title of his regiments - I think the "M" might be "Mounted", and the "L" may be "Lancers", but I am stuck on the "V".

His MRC also shows "Reduced to the Ranks 7.9.15   19F" - I am curious as to what happened! Presumably a Court Martial, would the record be available? Does 19F refer to a particular offence?

Augustus and John were sons of a Barrister & QC/KC, and probably would have been considered as "Landed Gentry" - the family owned a large house & considerable land in Co. Westmeath, Ireland. Augustus was a Curate in the Church of Ireland, based in Antrim, but left the Church when he was gazetted to the Connaught Rangers as a 2nd LT. I assume because of his family connections the same would have applied to John.

I have no connection to the Battersby family - I am researching Augustus as part of a project to list & research all those from Antrim & surrounding area who served during WW1. I am a member of 1st Antrim Somme Association.

Hello,

Your query about the initials - probably initials of the person's name e.g. "JM" could refer to a John Martin etc.

Best wishes,

Eddie

Hi Alison,

I'm sorry - these people aren't in my family tree, so unfortunately I have no information about them. If you know their religion/denomination and the area they lived it might be possible to find them in church records.

However, only a small number of church records from the 1700's have survived - you could check in the Public Records Office website (search church records) - PRONI have a Word document "Guide To Church Records" which lists what they have:

http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/search.jsp/search.lsim?sr=0&nh=10&cs=iso-8859-1&sc=&sm=0&mt=1&ha=proni-cms&qt=church+records

If you find the right church, and it is available on microfilm, you could try ordering a copy of the microfilm from your local Latter Day Saints Family History Centre.

Good luck with your search.

Eddie

Hi Tomy,

Mary Kelso was the daughter of William Kelso and Susanna McDowell - my Gt-Gt-Grandparents!

From the records of Dromara Presbyterian Church

"On 25 Septr
Alexr Kerr, servant to Revd. Wm. Craig to Mary Kelso, daughter of widow Wm. Kelso Kinallen.
Present -------- Mrs Craig Marybrook
                        Miss Corby, Annahilt"

Marybrook was the name of the Presbyterian Manse.

I have been unable to find a Baptism for Alexander, so his parents are unknown.

If you pm me I can give you details about William and Susanna, who lived in the townland of Kinallen, Dromore Parish.

Best wishes,

Eddie

Hi,

Although I haven't researched my Kelso line for several years, the name Mussen rang a bell - I have 3 baptisms from Dromara Presbyterian Church:

Children of Robert Mussen & Jane Kelso (no marriage record found):

James Birch Mussen b. 26 April 1816
Robert Mussen b. 12 August 1819
Margaret Anne Mussen b. 1 April 1821.

My Kelso ancestors came from Kinallen Townland, Dromore Parish and were associated with this church. I haven't found a definite link between Jane and my Kelso line.

Best wishes,

Eddie Kelso

Antrim Completed Look up Requests / Re: LDS Library Belfast
« on: Monday 17 October 11 13:45 BST (UK)  »
I'm not sure if you are aware - the LDS Family History Centre in Belfast is closed for renovations until January.

As well as BMD indexes for Northern Ireland, microfilms of the actual registrations are available:

Births 1864 - 1880 & 1900 - 1912
Deaths 1864 - 1870
Marriages 1845 - 1870.

If you have a digital camera, you can take photos of the enties, although a small number of the films are very poor quality ...

As far as I am aware, they don't have church records, but you can check that with them.
