Family History Beginners Board / Re: Trying to find birth record
« on: Sunday 07 January 18 19:04 GMT (UK)  »
Hello again Joseph,
I've checked a few things again this morning. Henry Magill/McGill and Mary McKeating had several children in Hutchesontown in Glasgow. The first one I've found was Henry Magill born in March 1876, then Isabella Magill in 1878. During this time they were living at 79 Mathieson Street. The wedding date for Henry and Mary was also given correctly, as is location (Belfast), so I am certain it is them. The next child in this location that I found was Rose McGill, born in February 1882. Then, Helen McGill born on Feb 7th 1885, and lastly Martha McGill born on July 7th 1887. For all children, parents and date of marriage are correct and at the time Rose, Helen and Martha were born they were living at 121 Mathieson Street.

My great great great grandmother Belinda Rougier (married name Davie/Davey) lived on Mathieson Street too. Her original name was Bridget, she was born in Dublin and married James Davey there in Haddington Road Church, with her mother Honor Rougier as a witness. Their first son died shortly after birth. He was James Davie/Davey and he was baptised in Haddington Road Church as a Catholic. One of the witnesses was Martha 'Rougere'. Next, Bridget/Belinda and James moved to Belfast. Their second child, Frances Louisa, was born in Belfast and baptised their (Catholic). One of the witnesses was Isabella 'Rouser' and Bridget/Belinda was noted as 'Bridget Rouser'. It is definitely our Bridget/Belinda, and we can trace Frances Louisa later in Scotland. Isabella(m) 'Rugier' was baptised in 1821 in Dublin in St. Andrew's, parents Frederick and Honor (Fredericii and Honora), the same parents as Bridget/Belinda. In all, given the birthplaces, parents and especially the connection with Mathieson Street, I'm pretty sure that your Isabella and my ancestor's sister are one and the same family. Family folklore from my grandmother was that the family was French, and spoke French. I only found out about the Irish connection when I started researching our family tree.  Bridget appeared in the second Scottish census she was in as 'Belinda'.

There are some other threads on this topic, some I see you already know about. In another, one person whose ancestor was Rose Magill told me her family folklore was that the Rougier family came from Rouens - I have no idea on this as yet.

A long message - hopefully interesting.

Regards,
Fiona

Hello Joseph,

I did not see your posting until now. I believe we are related and that Isabella is a sister of my great great grandmother. I've also traced Magill and McKeating while I was trying to figure this out, in a sense forwads. You may already have everything by now, I'll be happy to share what I know. The Rougier family did live in the Dublin area. Some migrated to Belfast then Glasgow area and Maithieson Street.

Best regards,
Fiona

Hello,
I am now pretty certain that the Rougiers/Rugiers that Scott, Gayle and I posted on a few years ago are the same family as the rougiers/rugiers/ruigers in the 1800s mentioned elsewhere in our string. If we start with Belinda Rougier who married James Davie - her death certificate gave her mother as Louisa. However, the odd thing was that an early census after they moved to the Glasgow area gave her name as 'Bridget' yet it was definitely the same person. At the time, I thought this was an error in the census. Have just been scouring the Dublin records again. Turns out a Bridget Rougier married a James Davey in Dublin in 1837. One of the witnesses was 'her mother Honora'. Could be a coincidence - but, the names Bridget and Davey (instead of Davie) appear in Frances Louisa Davey's (or Davie's) baptism record in Belfast and that all matches the Scottish census mentioned above. Then I looked again at Bridget's/Belinda's daughters' names, - Frances Louisa, Mary, Isabella, Belinda, Maria, and Martha. Then, looking again at Frederick and Honora, their daughters' names in the baptism records in Dublin are: Ludovica (Louisa), Isabella, Bridget (aka Belinda?), Martha, Maria and Frances. The dates work too. I haven't got any links for further back as yet. Any thoughts or additional discoveries? Best regards, Fiona

Hello,

Thanks for the new information Gayle, Dathai and 'Myluck'. There are so many names the same in the family that I think there must be a connection. Belinda Rougier (married name Davie) had children with the same names - here first daughter was called Louisa, others included Martha, Maria, Isabella (and Belinda). Her sisters that I know of were Frances and Maria. All these names were fairly common, it seems quite a coincidence though to have all in this family as well as Frederici's in Dublin. Off to do some more digging.

Thanks again!
Fiona

Hello,

Found out recently that there is also a Louisa Ruiger in the Irish records - her father was noted as Fredrick in one record. I suspect she might be another daughter of Frederick and Louisa. This person married in 1847, so the timing is about right but I have not been able to find anything to support this idea, so it is only a guess.

Fiona

Hi Scott,

The old posting was from me, just happened to be in here again this evening, and I'd given the information on Frederick and Belinda to a couple of people.

Belinda and Frederick Rougier are also my direct ancestors, as is Belinda Davie so we are distantly related. Would be happy to share what I have, although I don't seem to manage to get further back. Do not that at least some of the family moved to Belfast from Donnybrook before getting to Scotland.

My mother also told me htt the family was French.

If you'd like to exchange information please let me know.

Regards,
Fiona
