I have tried Family Tree Maker and Family Tree Builder to perform the function of splitting a tree. Simplistically, I want to split my large tree into all people in any way related to a husband and all people in any way related to a wife.

Neither program does what I want easily. The problem is with in-laws that are not related to the husband/wife directly. When the branch of the tree is split based an ancestors and/or descendants of the person in question, outlying in-laws do not end up in the new split branch. For this reason, I am writing my own freeware program to perform what, to me, seems like a common request and one that is not catered for by current programs.

I am happy to give the program to anyone who wants it. It only runs on Windows - it requires .NET framework - so it will happily run on Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8 - and probably XP.

If anyone wants to help me get this program working, send me an email and optionally an export of your tree as a GEDCOM file. The reason I ask for the GEDCOM file is so I can test the program on as much "real" data as possible. If you do not want to send me your tree, do not do so. However, if you find a bug in my program, you will have to supply the GEDCOM so I can fix the bug.

Anyone interested can contact me at mikelevoi AT gmail DOT com.

Hi,
I was at school with a Stott, who was born in 1949, and her mother's maiden name was Rees. However, she had three sisters, but none with the names you mention. Hope this is of some help.

Oreo,

Thank you very much; I think you may be onto something there. My grandparents remained in the Salford and Gorton areas until after ww2, and all the males were metal workers, blacksmiths, mechanics and engineers. I just wonder what had happened to little Martha Ann by the 1881 census, when I am pretty sure they were at living 33 Casson Street. Anyhow, I am very grateful. Jos.

Lancashire / Wigan marriage and death mystery

Hi All,

I have been searching for information about my g-g grandfather, John Jackson, who was born in Wigan in about 1834. I found him, a widower, in the 1871 and 1881 censuses in Manchester (Chorlton) with two children, Joseph (my g-grandfather) born 1863, and Jane, born 1865. The mystery is that I cannot find any record of his marriage to Mrs Jackson, (no idea of her name), nor any record of a death of a female Jackson, between 1865 and 1871, of about the right age. The children were both born in Salford, but whether John married in Wigan or the Manchester area, I cannot discover.

I would be so grateful for any information or suggestions anyone might have. Thanks, Jos Le Voi, Brisbane.

Devon Completed Lookup Requests / 1901 census lookup. please, Devonport/Stoke Damerel

If anyone has access to a 1901 census database by address, I would be grateful for the name of the family living at St Michael's Lodge, Stoke Damerel/Devonport. The house had been inhabited by the Hare family for some years, but by 1901 they are not listed. The beautiful house later became a boarding school, which I attended as a small child, and is now sub-divided, and I am hoping to write a history of it. Thanks, Jos Le Voi, Brisbane.

Hi Iria,

Thank you so much for your help. This could be promising because I had always heard (as a small child, on rare trips to England to see my grandmother), that Sarah's father had been a POLICEMAN! Sometimes the enumerators did make mistakes as regards place of birth, this may be one. I will definitely check it out. Thanks again. Cheers, Jos.
