Thanks both for the latest replies. I've attached a full snippet including the names. So the ancestor I'm specifically interested in is Rosa Hamill (her first name seems to vary in different records i.e. Rose Ann / Rosanna etc). You'll also see Rosa's mother on this census and her mother Mary's maiden name was Reilly. Rosa's father was Michael Hamill.
Rosa and sister Mary appear together on the 1871 census and both have indeed put County Monaghan as their place of birth. Rosa has a son Patrick McCue born 1868 in tow and she did go on to marry Patrick's father (who was also Patrick McCue).
I once heard that those from remote areas of Ireland would put the nearest town as their place of birth, is there any truth to that? If Rosa and family put Kingston/Kingstown on the 1861 census and were actually born in County Monaghan (according to the 1871 census) perhaps they intended to put Kingscourt (which is just across the Monaghan border with County Cavan) and simply mistook the name Kingscourt for Kingston/Kingstown?
I have noticed there were a number of Hamill and Reilly families within the Magheracloone parish of Monaghan.
