Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Place of birth on census
« on: Monday 24 March 25 13:18 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks both for the latest replies. I've attached a full snippet including the names. So the ancestor I'm specifically interested in is Rosa Hamill (her first name seems to vary in different records i.e. Rose Ann / Rosanna etc). You'll also see Rosa's mother on this census and her mother Mary's maiden name was Reilly. Rosa's father was Michael Hamill.
Rosa and sister Mary appear together on the 1871 census and both have indeed put County Monaghan as their place of birth. Rosa has a son Patrick McCue born 1868 in tow and she did go on to marry Patrick's father (who was also Patrick McCue).
I once heard that those from remote areas of Ireland would put the nearest town as their place of birth, is there any truth to that? If Rosa and family put Kingston/Kingstown on the 1861 census and were actually born in County Monaghan (according to the 1871 census) perhaps they intended to put Kingscourt (which is just across the Monaghan border with County Cavan) and simply mistook the name Kingscourt for Kingston/Kingstown?
I have noticed there were a number of Hamill and Reilly families within the Magheracloone parish of Monaghan.

Thanks for the swift replies. The confusing part is the same person lists County Monaghan as their place of birth in a later census but to my knowledge there isn't a Kingston or Kingstown in County Monaghan.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Place of birth on census

Evening everyone,
I'm hoping someone could help identify the place of birth on an 1861 census. It's clear that the place is somewhere in Ireland but the place itself is hard to read, I'd be grateful for opinions on what the place shows as.
Many thanks everyone.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help reading ames on marriage certificate
« on: Thursday 29 April 21 21:39 BST (UK)  »
Evening all,

I was hoping someone here could kindly use their keen eye to read a couple of names on a marriage certificate. I'm struggling to read John Mechan's wife maiden name (Rose Cairns?) and Patrick McDonald's wife maiden name (.... McMahon?).

Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you all.

Hi Portybelle

I've also come across this issue, did you ever get a conclusive answer to the puzzle on whether Helen's mother was Eupemia Allan or Ellen Robertson?

Hello Portybelle, i have also been doing some research recently on the same line as you (Joseph Kane, Peter/Patrick Cain & Eliza Cain) Joseph Kane & Isabella Duncan would of been my grandfather's grandparents, his father was Patrick who would of been your grandmother's brother. I have been in Edinburgh for the past week & visited register house a couple of times. So we are related, i am from London by the way as my grandfather & a brother of his moved down when they were in their late teens (about 18 & 24). If you could assist me with any family trees you may have this would be greatly appreciated.
