Europe / Germany/Prussia to England immigration
« on: Tuesday 27 December 11 21:29 GMT (UK)  »
I have 2 brothers who moved from Hanover or Hamburg to England sometime in the mid to late 1800's.  They married two sisters in Liverpool then both families moved to the US.  I have been able to find their families in NY/NJ without problem and I have their marriage certificates from Liverpool.  I am at a loss as to where to begin to find their German roots.

Henry (Presumably Heinrich) Tavis (Teves) B. 1838 Hamburg
Married Catherine Tate 21 June 1863 Liverpool
Father on marriage cert is listed as John Frederick Tavis
Found in 1870 New Jersey Census with wife and 3 children.  The youngest age 2 listed as being born in England.

Johann Teves (Tavis)  B. 1837 in either Hanover or Hamburg
Married Jane Tate 16 Oct 1864 Liverpool
Father interestingly listed as Frederick Teves.  Not sure why Henry decided to make his name more English but Johann changed to John Tavis after moving to USA.
Also found in 1870 NJ census with wife and 2 children. Youngest age 1 born in England.  Both families lived in same building together.

I have near nothing on the brothers or their parents aside from that information and I'm not really sure where to begin.  I have no information as to how/why/when they moved to Liverpool.  Any ideas would be appreciated!

England / Re: Tracking Ireland to Liverpool move

Wow I was on the completely wrong track of thought with their marriage.  Yes Richard was listed as being born in Ireland one year and Liverpool after that.  I wasn't really sure which to go with.

Thank you so much for the help I have some information to work with now.

Also can I ask where you were able to find the details of the marriage?  The only source I know of is the BMD index so it would be helpful to know where I could get those details :)

England / Tracking Ireland to Liverpool move
« on: Sunday 18 December 11 19:08 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking for some advice to find a family that moved from somewhere in Ireland to Liverpool between 1839ish and 1841.

The furthest back I have been able to find was their listing in the 1841 census of Liverpool.  Their 2 year old son Richard was noted as being born in Ireland so I can only assume they moved between 1839 and 1841.  Specifically my goals are to learn the wife's maiden name and what part of Ireland they came from so I can continue with my research.

I have tried a few of the free Irish birth searches (such as familysearch) and could find no further information using Richard's bio.  A marriage search on James Tate and Mary in Ireland was also fairly useless without more information on her.

Any advice is appreciated!  I hate these seemingly impossible road blocks.
