This collection was originally expected to be released at the end of 2011 [source: old announcement on the WYAS website]. When April rolled around I thought Ancestry would be devoting all of its resources to transcribing the 1940 census, resulting in further delays to the release of this collection. Guess not -- this collection was released today. Coincidentally(?), the 1940 indexing status was today updated for the first time in ten days (and Washington DC is still the only "state" in the process of being transcribed)!

My initial impression: the 'Parish' column in the search results is currently not very helpful. Numerous parishes are listed as "The Wesleyan Chapel" or variants thereof. Determining which Wesleyan chapel requires previewing the record and cross-referencing the reel and reference numbers with the information here (http://search.ancestry.com/search/dbextra.aspx?dbid=2268 ). Ancestry's search routine should be doing this cross-reference lookup programmatically!

Also, the collection appears incomplete; compare the above list to http://www.archives.wyjs.org.uk/documents/archives/Collections%20Guide%202.pdf . Are there additional records on the way?

Glad (part of) the collection has finally been released; a bit disappointed so far with the quality of the search results; curious about how this project was managed.

suttontrust and newmodernist,

You may be interested in the book The Morley Families of Halifax, West Yorkshire by J.A.E. Morley and C.S.B. Morley. It is available for free online viewing at http://www.MorleyOfHalifax.com. Your Thomas Morley is featured in "Family D". As you know, Thomas came from Wakefield. His father (another Thomas) came from Holbeck, Leeds, and it seems his grandfather and great-grandfather did as well.

Arriving comparatively late in Halifax, your Morley family is not the main focus of my book, so my information is limited. Nevertheless, my book contains about 20 pages on the descendants of your Thomas Morley, and offline I have additional information on Thomas' ancestors and the descendants of his brothers John and James.

I'd be interested in comparing notes; my preference is that you contact me through my website.

PS: Kudos to Jebber for finding Thomas' marriage record.

Hello Westher,

Sorry for the mix-up. The page references I gave you are now outdated. I updated the book in the middle of last month. I do this at least once a month. The pagination changes whenever I add information.

To illustrate how impermanent the page references are: as of today, Michael's entry now spans page 326-327. And this will surely change with subsequent updates. The most robust method for finding an individual is to locate their name in the index (at the back of the book). Then follow the hyperlink(s) beside the individual's name.

Michael's entry has hyperlinks to his ancestors and children.

"Entry B48" meant that Michael was individual number 48 in Family B (of last month's draft).

I hope this clears things up.

Westher,

You will be interested in the book The Morley Families of Halifax, West Yorkshire by J.A.E. Morley and C.S.B. Morley. It is available for free online viewing at http://www.MorleyOfHalifax.com. Your Michael Morley is (in the present edition) treated in entry B48 on page 319.  From his 1848 marriage certificate (transcribed at www.lan-opc.org.uk) we know for certain that his father’s name was John. In the above book I argue that this John was most likely the son of David MORLEY and Grace HELLIWELL, of Wheatley Royd Farm, Brearley, Halifax, Yorkshire.

I suppose it is plausible that your sources mistook ‘Halifax’ for ‘Hull’.

The John Morley that married Mary HINCHLIFFE also appears in this book, on page 281. The two John Morleys were first cousins; the husband of Mary Hinchliffe stayed in Yorkshire and was a schoolmaster at Cragg Vale, Halifax.

I agree with everything else stated by Luzzo, Duck and mosiefish. The purported link to Leicestershire is indeed unfounded.
