Jane's father Robert Kipling was descended from Captain Robert Kipling, a local hero buried in the churchyard at Barnard Castle. For a glimpse into his story, see @mikekipling2.

The Rev Joseph Kipling and family may be found in 1851 in Ellison Street, Gateshead. He, the grandfather of Rudyard Kipling, was a methodist minister and so moved around every two years or so to different churches.

You can find out  more about him, and his son John Lockwood Kipling, in "The Pater" by Arthur  R Ankers.

Best wishes.

Mary,

John Kipling was almost certainly not born at Burneston but in Barningham, also in North Yorkshire, although his father Francis moved to live in Brough whilst he was a child. He most probably did marry in Burneston but retured to live in Brough where for some years he was an Innkeeper. My origins are alos Barningham and I have been running a project to compare the DNA of various male Kiplings. A relative ofyoirs has participated and our DNA's match, adding weight to the above explanation.

The attached provides some background and there is more at genealogy.kipling.me.uk

Best wishes.

Hello,

I have been researching the Kiplings for some time. The Nottingham Kiplings have been shown by DNA testing to be a branch of the original Kipling familiy form Romaldkirk in Teesdale (where they date back to the 14th century). Please refer to my website, genealogy.kipling.me.uk and especially the DNA Newsletter.
