East Lothian (Haddingtonshire) / Re: Christian name mystery - Smollett
« on: Sunday 10 November 13 13:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Nicole,

My David Anderson Reid was the only Reid brother not to leave Scotland, so I am not much help with the New Zealand Reids. I do know that his brother Smollett Henderson Reid was the father of Georgina Reid, who married George William Morley and they had at least one son, named Smollett, but I'm afraid I don't know much else. Do you know who your David A Reid buried in Auckland is?

Sorry I couldn't help more but I will have a look through the information I have to see if there is anything else.

Shropshire Lookup Requests / Re: Shropshire Record Office Lookup Request - DYER

Thanks Jim! So it was Michael Cowley... and not John Conley!

Yes it could be him, I'd need to look at my notes but I'm sure I did find him in Shropshire in 1851 and 1861, but I think the ages differed quite a bit so it's hard to pinpoint when he actually was born!

Shropshire Lookup Requests / Shropshire Record Office Lookup Request - DYER

I'm trying to find a marriage and two deaths in Shropshire.

Margaret Dyer, born in Ireland around 1831 but came with her parents and siblings to Broseley in Shropshire, was married sometime in the 1850s. Unfortunately I can't figure out the husband's name, it's either John or Michael and I'm not sure if the surname is Cowley or Conley. They were living in Broseley in 1861, so I am guessing they got married in that area. I'd like to know the date they got married, and confirmation of what her husband's name actually was!

I am also looking to find the death certificates of her parents, Cain Dyer and Margaret Gallagher who probably died in Shropshire sometime in the 1860s. Their ages are hard to pinpoint, but Cain was born around 1791 and Margaret was born around 1788, both in Sligo, Ireland. I'd like to know where and when they died, and what their parents names were if possible.

I'd really appreciate any help, as I am not very confident in researching family history in England.

Thanks,
Michael

Ireland / McConnan/McConnell
« on: Sunday 02 December 12 21:01 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to locate the area of Ireland that my ancestors came from and not having much luck so far.

What I know so far is that James McConnan (or McConnen) married Susan Clarke in 1868 in a Catholic church in Dundee, Scotland, both aged 22. The marriage certificate is really poor quality but he was the son of James and Ann McConnan, whose maiden name looks almost like it says Leitch. Susan was the daughter of Thomas Clarke and Susan Smith (although her death certificate says something else illegible, something like Susan Carlan)

James and Susan's first son was born in Dundee as James McConnan but sometime in the 1870s the family name was changed to McConnell (not sure why) and they moved to West Calder in Midlothian. None of the census records give more detail than James and Susan being born in Ireland, and their ages vary a lot but presumably they were born between 1845 - 1850.

I was hoping for some advice or some answers on their birthplace or their parents, as I can't seem to get the hang of researching Irish records!

Thanks,
Michael

London and Middlesex / Annie Scott in Greenwich

Hello,

Just wondering if anyone might be able to help me find the death or burial of Annie Scott. I'm assuming it will be in Greenwich but I could be wrong. In 1911 she was aged 51 and living with her sons Joseph, William and Robert at Tunnell Avenue in Greenwich. Unfortunately with such a common name and under a vague time frame of anytime after 1911, it's a struggle! Any advice? She was born Anne Sutherland Cane in South Leith, Edinburgh to Joseph Cane and Janet Brown (who was also known as Jessie Reid) and married William Scott in Dysart, Fife in 1884. Her husband died in Greenwich, I think in 1906.

Thanks
Michael

Really? How so? I was 100% sure that the groom is my great great grandfather but if it is between those dates then it must be someone else.

This is a photo of my great great grandfather John Mcleod's wedding. What I am trying to determine is which one, as he married twice.

The first wedding took place in 1874 to Margaret Herd, and I think it was in Markinch.

The second wedding took place in 1886 to Catherine Allan in Edinburgh.

What do people think? 1870s or 1880s? Is it even possible to tell?

Thanks

Fife / Re: Headstone Inscriptions LOCHGELLY CEMETERY
« on: Thursday 12 April 12 18:21 BST (UK)  »
Hello again Norrie,

I was wondering if there are any Shands buried at Lochgelly... I don't know much about them but I'm looking for -
David Shand (b 1768) & Margaret Wilson... some of their children were
Margaret b.c. 1804
Isobel b 1800
John b 1808
Christian b 1806
David b 1801

I think his parents were David Shand (b.c.1733) & Isobel Gibb
and his parents may have been Andrew Shand and Margaret Anderson

Not sure if much would have survived from that long ago, but thought it was worth a shot.

Thanks,
Michael
