Aberdeenshire / Re: Mary Anderson nee Gordon, b. 1682, d. (probably) Inverugie 1725

Hi Cliffhuber
That's very interesting but can you give some more detail? There was a James Anderson, son of William Anderson and Margaret Squire, Brora, baptised at Clyne, Sutherland, on 19 Nov 1785 so I don't see how James William Anderson born 1772 could be a child of the same couple. The James (bap 1785) is shown in "Records of a Family of Andersons of Peterhead" (privately printed 1936) as having "gone to sea". If that's correct, he's unlikely to be the same man as James William the surgeon.

Sorry about the multiple posts. Am still trying to get the hang of this.

Hi Keith
A book, "Records of a Family of Andersons of Peterhead from 1560" (privately printed 1936), lists 7 children of a William Anderson in Brora, Sutherland, and his wife Margaret Squire. One of them is Alexander who "went to Ayrshire and had a large family" - no further details given. The Clyne OPR confirms an Alexander "son of William Anderson and Margaret Square [sic] in Brora" baptised 31 Dec 1787. I'm certain he is the man you are looking for and that he (as often happened) understated his age in the 1841 and 1851 censuses - perhaps to hide the fact that he was 17 years older than his wife, or just vanity.
There are public trees on Ancestry (which by the way I'm always wary of trusting) that will give you (correctly) William's ancestry back another few generations. I am descended from his brother John.
The Andersons are a most interesting family - they founded the Orient Line of steamers.
I often wondered what became of the Ayrshire branch and thought there were no male Andersons left now. It's a pleasure to know I was obviously wrong!
Happy to exchange further info.

Hi Keith
Hope this might help. One of them is Alexander who went to Ayrshire and "had a large family" - no further details given. However, the Clyne OPR confirms an "Alexander son of William Anderson and Margaret Square [sic] in Brora" baptised on 31 Dec 1787. I'm certain he's the man you are looking for and that he understated his age in both the 1841 and 1851 censuses (not unknown!) - perhaps to conceal the fact that he was so much older than his wife, or perhaps just vanity. There are trees on Ancestry (not that I ever trust them much) that give William's ancestry (correctly) for a few generations. I am descended from William's brother John.

Hi Keith
Hope this might help. A privately printed book, "Records of a Family of Andersons of Peterhead" (1936) shows William Anderson in Brora, Sutherland, and his wife Margaret Squire as having 7 children. I am certain he is the man you are looking for and that he understated his age by five years in both the 1841 and 1851 censuses - probably not wishing to appear that much older than his wife, or perhaps just vanity. There are trees on Ancestry (not that I trust them much) that will give you William's ancestry.
I am descended from one of William's brothers. We never knew what became of the Ayrshire Andersons and thought there were no male Andersons left. It's so nice to know I was wrong.

Aberdeenshire / Re: Greig family Aberdeenshire connected with Edvard Grieg composer
« on: Sunday 11 January 15 13:42 GMT (UK)  »
My ancestor was William Greig, tenant farmer in New Caik (Keak or Cavoch), Tyrie parish, Aberdeenshire, who married Margaret Legg at Strichen 24 Aug 1732. Of his seven daughters, the first three were baptised in Monquhitter: Anna 1735, Mary 1738, and Elizabeth 1740. The other four were all baptised in Tyrie: Isabel 1742, another Isabel 1743, Margaret 1743, and another Elizabeth 1749.
William Greig is supposed, from family tradition, to have been factor to the Fraser family of Strichen but I have found no evidence to support this. His second daughter Mary married in 1763 John Adamson who definitely was the Frasers’ factor between 1778 and 1801.
Does anyone on the forum know anything about this family? We also have a vague tradition of a relationship to Grieg the composer.

Hello Gary
How nice to hear from someone living in the Gordon country - especially for someone many miles away, like me in Suffolk. Thanks for making contact. I'll look out for Birkenburn in my searches for Gordons.
All the best for 2014.

Renfrewshire / Re: Orr family Lochwinnoch
« on: Thursday 26 December 13 17:02 GMT (UK)  »
Many thanks Don for responding although I had already seen that link. The trouble is that almost everyone in Lochwinnoch seems to have been called Orr. I am hoping sometime to get to see Andrew Crawford's "Cairn of Lochwinnoch" which might help to sort some of them out.
