Ireland / Re: Some early Irish lawn tennis players

Hello,

Thanks for your helpful reply. I have since been able to find more information on Philip George Sandford and some of the other early Irish lawn tennis players I mentioned in my original post.

Hello, Sanford was a well known landlord family just outside Castlereagh Co. Roscommon - he may be related to them. Its not a common name in Ireland.

I wonder if your Evelyn Tootell ever played lawn tennis? An E. Tootell is mentioned as the runner-up at the Kent County Championships in Blackheath in July 1901. This tournament was open to players born in Kent or who had been residing there for at least two years.

I had look at the BMD site and it has an Evelyn Tootell whose birth was registered in Maidstone in the summer of 1883. However, I havent' been able to find out anything else about her.

Other Countries / Some difficult to place lawn tennis players (circa 1910-30)

I'll add a short list of female lawn tennis players about whom it is very difficult to find out anything, including their first name(s) and places of birth. I'm just looking for some very basic biographical information on each of them (date and place of birth death, plus any marriage details):

E.H. Berthoud - possibly born in India (played at Wimbledon in 1920)
--

Mrs S.E. Charlton - played at Wimbledon in the 1920s; appears to be the wife of player Samuel Ernest Charlton (1882-1962)
--

Mrs J.L. Colegate - played at Wimbledon and elsewhere in the 1920s; could have been British
--

Mrs R.R. Jackson - played at Wimbledon and elsewhere in the 1920s; might well have been Irish
--

Mrs Bruce May - active circa 1920-25; could be Mrs Bruce-May
--

Mrs J.B. Perrett - played at Wimbledon and elsewhere circa 1910-25; sounds French, but could have been British
-----

Any help would be appreciated.

I'm looking for some basic biographical information on the early English lawn tennis player Helen Jackson (later Mrs George Murray Atkins; 1867-1940) and her family, including her siblings (she appears to have one or two sisters who were also lawn tennis players).

I'm looking for dates and places of birth (and death) and marriage details.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, Claire,

Thanks for that information. I think the Violet Elton I'm looking for is the first one.

According to this source, she died in Sidmouth in 1969:

Thanks to everyone who contributed so much rare information on Arnold W. Blake. I once read a longish article on him in a contemporary source ("Pastime"), which managed not to reveal his first name.

In the early decades of lawn tennis it was common for players to take part in tournaments over several decades and in some cases even to play their best tennis into their thirties. Age meant less then than it does now.

I am also looking for the same information on another early badminton and lawn tennis player, Hazel Hogarth, whose place of birth I don't know.

Can anyone add any concrete information to the following details on the early Indian-born badminton and lawn tennis player Violet Elton:

Died March 4, 1969 in Sidmouth, Devon [correct?]

Any help would be appreciated.
