Hi Pingu

I don't know if this will help any but there were American soldiers stationed at Bateman School, Park Lane in Knypersley. This would have been about 1945. More recently Bateman School became Park Middle School.
I have no idea where you could get any more information though.

To add to the above my mum found some more info last night.

Some GI's were stationed at Fairhaven in Knypersley. Others were stationed in the Fustian (Velvet cutting) Mill and the Miners Welfare Building both in Biddulph Moor.

This she found this in a book called 'Biddulph Moor Within living Memory' by B Ridgeway

Armed Forces / Boer war query: Knott
« on: Wednesday 05 July 06 23:38 BST (UK)  »
My granddad name Percy Mons Knott often spoke about a cousin who he claimed had the name Pretoria. Having done some delving into my family tree I have come across an Ernest Knott who it appears was the father of an Isabella Pretoria Knott.

Ernest was born abt 1870 in Staffordshire and married Clara Dean in 1899. On the census of 1901 I can find reference to Clara Knott and her daughter Isabella living with her in-laws. Under occupation albeit crossed out it states Supported by War Fund. Also birth records for 1900 list an Isabella Pretoria Knott born Wolstanton.

On this basis I am merely guessing that perhaps Ernest was in the Boer war, either stationed in that area at the time of Isabella's birth or even killed in action.

My question to any who may be able to help is where is the best place to go for further information to confirm if he was in the Boer War. I don't know of anyone living who would remember anything about him I don't even have a possible regiment for him. I'm just drawing blanks on all areas that I have looked into so far.

Also what was the War Fund?

Thanks in advance

Hi brasso

Thanks for the reply I have also just read your message as well. I must confess family history searching has been a bit sporadic as of late due to an on going battle wih a mobile phone mast application and the local planning department! Once this is sorted, soon I hope, I can once again submerge myself in family history. I will look through all that I have at present in a bit more detail and see how your information links in, I must admit it looks promising.  :)

The Lighter Side / Re: Rememberance Day - Veterans still living.

Every year I wear my poppy with pride, however this time my 5 year old son asked me why I had a flower. I tried so hard to explain to him what it was all about but I don't think he fully understood. He sat with me though and watched some of the service on TV (we intend to take him to a local service next year when he is little older). We feel it is something he should know about and with my husband being interested in Military History you can be sure he will learn about what happened.

What I found so strange was the fact that I was the only person at work to wear a poppy. I know it is a small thing to do compared to what those guys did, but I feel they deserve our respect and by wearing a poppy I am showing that respect for them.

Also this year rememberance day meant more to me than it has before, I think because I have found as many others have here on Rootschat, how many in their families fought and how many did not return from either WW1 or WW2.

"We will remember them"

Hi HH

I haven't been able yet to substantiate all the info on Mary Ann Levens, whether I have located the right one or not yet. I also believe that there are in fact two to my knowledge. One from London and one from The Warwickshire area.

At the moment I'm hedging my bets on the one from Warwickshire. I'm just in the process of applying for Brith, marriage and death certs to confirm information one way or the other.

However that has been put a little on the back burner whilst I try and stop a mobile phone mast being placed 15 metres from my house!

Can you confirm which of the Mary Levens it is you are interested in. There is a bit of a thread about my lot on the Ireland section as my GGgrandfather (Patrick Foy) was Irish.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi madabout

Yes Phyllis married Percy Mons Knott in Tunstall register office in 1940. He died 1973. Was a miner most of his life.

Trying to work out also why he is called Mons, born 1914 called after a battle in WW1 but that's a whole new topic!  ;D

Will check out the site you mentioned as well

Cheers.

I needed something to do in the evening after finishing organising my wedding! ;D

I thought it would also be a nice thing to do for my son as he will inherit all of the family photos and by doing this they won't just be unknown faces.

Also now I'm married my dad and his brother are the last of one side of the family. Shame the name is't carring on, but it really would not work as a double barrelled name. :)

Hi madabout

Been away taxing my mums brain about the family and apparently my uncle is doing a search too but I don't know how far he has got yet!
She did tell me Phylis was a nippie for Lyons tea rooms back in the thirties, she would have been in her late teens I think, before she got married but not sure of the details yet.
Thanks for the info on Gertrude and Elizabeth. Mum does remember visiting Elizabeth on her birthday.
She also remebers an Aunt Kate, I think this may be Kate Rawlins.
My mum has told some of her siblings about my search so they may remember something as well so I'll carry on hunting.
Will have to try and get hold of Bertha's marriage cert. Find out who is her father.

Thanks again for the info

regards
Menfreya
