Cornwall Completed Lookup Requests / Re: 1851 census White - Tywardreath area
« on: Wednesday 01 June 05 18:59 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I'm wondering if you are interested in the family of John White of Tywardreath? I located a marriage record for John to Susan Penrose/Penvose June 16, 1846. I believe Susan may have been a sister to my ancestor, John Penvose who died in Tywardreath in 1866. The marriage record states her father was John, John White's father is listed as Thomas White, a miner. I haven't researched this line further as of yet. I believed the surname was Penrose, but all of John's children used the Penvose spelling in the US, as did his son, Edward, who settled in Barnsley, Yorkshire.

I would appreciate a look up in the 1851 census for Lansallos for Thomas Hambley, born circa 1802 in Cornwall. He lived there in 1841 with wife Mary and children: Catherine (later married to George Jones), William, Sarah, Mary & Richard. Catherine & her husband George Jones lived in Lostwithiel in 1861 and immigrated about 1873 to Tioga Co., PA.
Thanks in advance, Dorothy

Cornwall / Re: Origins of Penrose aka Penros

Hello Chris,
I'm wondering if you have come across the Penvose spelling of the name? I at first believed the name was changed when the family immigrated to the US, but have been in touch with one line of the family, now living in Barnsley, Yorkshire, and they also use the Penvose spelling. The earliest ancestor I've been able to locate is John Penvose born circa 1821 in St. Austell. He married Jane Blewett in Tywardreath in 1847, and died there in what I assume was a mining accident, in 1866. All his children, except Edward Penvose, immigrated to the US in the early to mid 1870's, settling in Tioga Co., PA then later in Clearfield Co., PA.
The spelling variation has been a mystery to me for years, so if you have any thoughts on this subject, I'd appreciate hearing from you!
Thank you, Dorothy
