Armed Forces / 49th regiment based at Salford in 1864
« on: Wednesday 27 November 13 21:42 GMT (UK)  »
My wife's ancestor, William Taylor, was married to Isabel Mary Constant at the Cathedral Parish Church, Manchester on April 23rd 1864. His occupation is shown as Private, 49th Regiment, based at the barracks, Salford.

Can anybody tell me what the regiment was doing there at that time, and how I may find out a bit more about his army career?

Many thanks for any help given.

Yes, Wollaston is very confusing. There are several in the country, and it's hard to pin my Wollaston into a particular county. As has been pointed out, it was in Worcestershire and is now in the West Midlands.

I wonder where they will move us next.  ::)

Please bear with this silver surfer, because I'm having a similar problem myself. I want to post a link to the History of Wollaston forum, but in the Useful Links section there are only two buttons 'notify' and 'new poll'. I can't see a button for 'new post'.

Many thanks for any help given.
